Greenhouse

back to Greenhouse Good ventilation is essential for plant
health. In sunshine, and even in winter, temperatures will rise to danger
levels unless air can circulate. In dull, cold weather, plant diseases caused
by moulds and rots will result from humid, stale air, caused by poor
ventilation.
In a greenhouse, summer
temperatures soar quickly to 35 degrees C (95 degrees F) and above unless there
are adequate vents or windows, both in the roof, and in the sides of the
building. During summer days, the door(s) will need to stay open
too.
In winter, ventilation is still
needed. It must, therefore, be possible to open vents or windows whenever
necessary, a factor you will need to allow for when installing insulating
material.
Gas or paraffin heaters
generate water vapour which causes condensation problems unless the greenhouse
is adequately ventilated.
Automatic vents are inexpensive, need no power and are simple to
install. These will open when the temperature rises, ventilating the greenhouse
when needed, during your absence. |
