My husband's family had a plantation in Jamaica and a summer place on the Hudson--Col. Ann Hawks Hay, a direct ancestor, fought in the Revolution from NY and was a friend of George Washington.

Karen, nice start! I am researching Gourlay's from Glasgow,I am descendant from a James Gourlay married to Isabella Fulton in Glasgow June 20, 1841. They emmigrated to Canada and had the following children; Isabella,Alexander Graham,William,James,John,Elizabeth,Margaret, and Mary. As there is a naming tradition is Scotland I was struck by the similarities in the names James,Alexander and William. Do you have any information to suggest a relationship??

Hi! their Karen, I have enjoyed my visit to your page and it is a very interesting site. I have downloaded some of it and will have a good look through the pages and see if there is anything which may be the same surnames asI am researching. I see you are on the Midlothian list, and please let me know which surnames you have on the East Coast? Best wishes, Fred MacKay.

Hi Karen --You've made a good job of it. I'm trying to research a good friend's tree, one of the lines going back is a BOGLE married a male BARR --I am still in the throes of moving with a sick hubby and do not have all details to hand--but a female given name is BRUNTON that my friend was also given [from the areas around and in Glasgow] If anyone has any Brunton's in their families with any ANY OTHER SURNAME would be grateful to hear from you also Keep up the good work Karen. Hi Karen, I trace my GOURLEY line back to James GOURLEY and Sarah McKEEN who were married at Templepatrick, Antrim, Ireland in 1844. Their son James was married at Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland in 1875. He had 10 children including a William and an Alexander - all born in the Glasgoe area. Let me know if you see any connection. Kevin Owen Meridian, Idaho, USA

Since you said that you had re established the URL link, I thought I would give it a try - and so here I am at last. Isn't this grand - especially as for the moment I'm -1 on the old Mexican scale !!

Karen - My mother's maiden name was Flanigan and I never thought to look for her roots in Scotland! Her grandparents came to the USA in the late 1800's or early 1900's and I always thought from Ireland but have found very few mentions of Flanigan there. Maybe I should look further in Scotland.

Hi Karen, You were in my thoughts in July knowing you were getting married. Congratulations I hope you both will be really happy. What is your married name, I see the odd Karen(name of course)on the Lanark List and wonder whether it is you. I realize you are busy now but miss your input. Have a happy life.

I am delighted to find someone in Scotland that I can communicate with that has the same desire to research the Whan(n)s in both Scotland and America. I am sure that some day we might find the connection between the families and a lot of history. Since the name is not a common one, it is to our advantage. The name started out as MacWhan and was dropped along the way. In American I found the same person called Whan and also called Whann. William is a very common first name for Whan(n)s so that has been a problem. Regards,
