I have only recently got on line, today I decided to look
for more information on breeders of Berners as we as a family have had a Berner
called Rika who had to be put to sleep on thursday last 28/03/02 which was
terrible day for us as she had been with us for 7 and half years she also died
because of bone cancer frontleft leg. I was looking at your website and enjoying
the typical behaviour of this wonderfully humanbreed and getting great comfort
from your thoughts of dog related incidents only to discover that you had gone
through the same problems at the end.Icried with your poem. best regards keith

Thanks for sharing stories. Our beautiful Zeus was
diagnosed with bone cancer as well a few days ago. Thanks for taking the time to
write me back and give me some sort of solitude. You really have to own one of
these big beautiful dogs to appreciate their love and how much they can give
back. God Bless you, in memory of your family of Bernese. And safe travel and
love to Zeus when his time comes.

Help!!
I've been trying to obtain a Bernese puppy now for about 12 months. We (my young
family and I) have wanted one for a long time and decided that a female BMD
would be most suitable. However the closest we have come is now but there are
only male puppies available. We have decided then to have a male. Is there an
enormous difference in size? How do the larger dogs of the breed get on with
older female dogs of another breed (we have an older Golden Retreiver)

I would like to converse with someone that has a bernese.
We recently acquired a two pups from the local shelter that the people there
told me that they both where from a litter of nine that the owner couldn't care
for any longer. The problem is that Zach appears to have the markings but Jada
is only black and white and about 4-5 pounds lighter than "her" brother.

I'm just beginning to learn about the BMDs and am finding
it difficult to obtain much information about the breed. I have been able,
however, to find quite alot of information on the "Greater Swiss Mountain Dog".
While they both hail from the same region of the world and the information I
read indicates these breeds are very closely related if not one in the same,
I've not read anywhere where this is in fact the case. Can anyone out there help
me? Are they the same, closely related, or distant cousins or their own unique
individuals?

Hello from another Yorkshire BMD owner (2 yr old called
Banjo - my first but not my last) - Lovely site - does great justice to the
breed - The friendliest in the world - Just like their owners obviously - as is
evidenced by this guestbook - keep up the good work and thanks for the stories.
My only amusing tale of Banjo is when I found my 81 yr old Father in Law
pinioned to the chair by Banjo who had decided that he was going to sit on the
lap of this friendly old gent and lick him to death. Quite frankly he looked so
happy there I was loathe to ask him to get off, but the promise of a dog biscuit
caught his attention and I'm glad to say Frank was none the worse for wear
(though a little cleaner around his face courtesy of Banjo's Grooming)

I was tackled by a Bernese puppy on the street who tackled
me again when I tried to leave. Owner and I couldn't figure it out -- plenty
other people to tackle. Thinking of getting a puppy, did lots of research and
learned realistic things like the "gardening" problem and the colossal
clumsiness/immaturity of the breed. Still love them. Impossible to look for a
BMD to rescue: Do you think the owners of BMDs are incredibly tolerant because
these dogs just have the most good-natured souls and are so cute/comical?
Writing from Yale University -- CT, USA. Don't you think a Berner would adore
"being a professor" on a college campus? Hard to find/afford one (sigh).

I think bernese mountain dogs are the most enchanting
canine
that ever exist. Naturally, it took me many years before
actually getting a dog. My hubby and I really browsed all
the literature possible before we got our lovely dog.
Her name is Cleo, short for Cleopatra, of course. In truth,
we fell in love with their gorgeous colours and 'teddy-bear'
like appearance. Cleo is so thoughtful anf loving. Over the
years, she has become more and more attach to us. Cleo has this
great personality. A lovely family dog and she adores little
children. The only worry I have is the fact that she could
lick them to death! Well, I just thought I'd write. You see,
I am on vacation and we had to leave Cleo with another
family for a week. I miss her terribly. We'll see her tonight.
Your homepage helps me to get less miserable. Ta!

What a wonderful site! I am the owner of a six and a half
month old Bernese called Tess (aka Coliburn Elle)who is probably from the same
line as your first dog. Tess is named after my mum (Esther) who died four years
ago. I don't think she would be too offended! Your stories made me laugh out
loud, we have similar tales to tell of our 'disaster.' We have no settee left (Tess
sees no reason why she should not bury her chews under its cushions) the garden
has been decimated and the garden shed now has a huge hole in its side, courtesy
of those puppy teeth. She is thoroughly lazy, enjoying woodland walks but
needing to sleep for hours afterwards. She sulks, she moans, she's a bit handy
with her paws (unintentionally, but they are huge and very heavy) and I wouldn't
change her for the world. She's won our hearts.

What a lovely website you have, I have not owned a Bernie
but have always loved them and my husband and I have promised ourselves a Bernie
when we find ourselves without a dog (which hopefully will not be too soon) We
have always had dogs, Belgian Shepherds (me) and nutty (usually!!) Border
Collies (my husband). I used to show my Belgians but then came along Joshua (now
4) followed in quick succession by Samantha (now 3) and that rather put a damper
on my showing (my husband works unpredictable shift patterns!) I must admit that
the prospect of getting up at 3am to drive 2-3 hundred miles for a dog show does
not appeal now - but who knows in a few years time, when the kids are down the
salt mines and time is mine again (at least at weekends when my nose is not at
the banking grindstone) I may feel the lure of the show ring again.
Anyway enough rattling on, I only came on to congratulate you on your web site
so
WELL DONE!
Bye
Sharon.

Hi, my name is Jayne Richards and I live with 4 Bernese
Mountain Dogs and one Siamese Cat who thinks shes in charge
of all the dogs.
I started in 1990 with a Bernese from Heather Head and it
has just gone from there.
I had a litter of puppies in 1994 from my bitch and
Champion Arrowmeet Chieftan and although we were only going
to keep one bitch my husband decided he wanted to keep the
male forhimself. I lost my first bitch from cancer in September
1997 and decided that I would like another bitch.
So we mated feather with Kernow masterpiece and guess what we
kept two more puppies. I definately think four dogs is enough.
But I am showing both of them at Crufts in March.
I live in Cornwall which is really a lovely part of the world
to keep dogs. And I am definately a complete nut about them.
I must sign off as its time to go home, but keep writing
as its lovely to see UK Bernese on the web.
Bye for now Jayne Richards

Have enjoyed your stories of puppyhood, and have found
your experience of puppyhood quite similar to our own--minus the Rachel-puppy.
You write well.
We are looking for a male companion for our nine month old Bernese, Hildegard.
Have you heard of any litters?

HI! I am Carol from western Australia and I too love the
bernese mountain dog, at present I only own one but that is about to change as I
am soon to get another young puppy.
I was a breeder of a differant breed for many years but but I have been BERNA
STRUCK!!!!! I just fell in love with their personality, my friend breeds them
and has done so for 20 years. I work with dogs 7 days a week so I get to know
their breed by nature.
I would love to hear from other BMD lovers.
yours in bernese Carol from Australia!

Lovely dogs! My boyfriend and I are picking up our first
Berner pup tomorrow. He turned 8 mos yesterday and we're lucky to get him due to
an impulse buy of someone else who has come to his senses and knows his is the
wrong family for a big dog. A local breeder helped him find some Berner folk --
us! We're, naturally, very excited about our family addition. Your site is
well-designed & easy to travel. There should be many more visitors. Good luck
with your dogs and new site.

This is a very refreshing web site. I tragically lost my
companion of 14.5 years a couple of months ago. She was a smaller dog. This
time, I'm adopting a "big dog" puppy, a German Shepherd/Bernese Mountain Dog
mix, from the animal shelter. I really appreciate the stories and descriptions
of life with them, their size, habits, puppyhood, and their wonderful
personality. Thank you so much for the insight. Now, if only I can think of a
name for MY new little girl. . .!

Lovely site. Nice stories, very pleasant to read! We've
had a Bernese MD. He passed away the day before christmas last year..... The URL
mentioned does not contain English pages (yet)..... It's the website of the
Dutch Bernese Mountain Dogs Assocation.

As a member of PADS, I came to the Chronicles, via their
web page. I've 2 Akitas, Tyke and Zeus, who I love to bits. I enjoyed the
chronicles, and loved the design of your pages.
