Visit to Japan

In April 1998 I visited Japan for an RWS-CC and an ISO/IEC JTC1 standards meeting. Here I am below at the JTC1 meeting (see red arrow):

The highlight of the trip was a visit to the Yamadera temples in the mountains near Sendai. The temples date originally from 860 (Jikaku Daishi) and are carved into the face of the Holy Mountain of the Tendai Buddhist sect. The buildings include the oldest beechwood structure in Japan. They seem to form a natural extension to the sheer cliffs and steep slopes and the only way to reach them is to climb the 1000 step staircase up the mountainside. .
