no one else in the family could play the piano, although my mother and father were both music lovers. Around 1950, my parents offered to pay for music tuition for me.
At the tender age of ten, all this seemed a lot to take on board. At times I must admit that I felt more than tempted to give it all a miss. Fortunately, I resisted the urge and continued to study music. This, in due course; proved to be one of the few more sensible decisions in my life
I had wanted to try other styles of music whilst playing the piano. But I was never allowed to play anything other than classical music during my period of tuition. Skiffle presented me with a double challenge: a new style of music and a new instrument. I could not resist; I had to have a go. This introduction to a new style and instrument also served to introduce to me a whole new way of life.
By this time, I was feeling confident enough to attempt to form a group. I had mentioned to some friends of mine that I was busy learning to play the guitar. We used to meet quite regularly as friends
The group included George and I playing guitars; Jimmy had agreed to play tea chest bass and Glynn would play the washboard. As regards vocals, well, we all chipped in, really. Sometimes George would sing lead vocals; sometimes it would be me
