Arthur Gray

It is with sadness that the club notes the passing of Arthur Gray on 24-01-10 aged 92, he surely had claim to be the club’s longest serving member.

It is believed that Arthur previously played for Hastings Chess Club before moving in 1957. The history and origins of Stevenage Chess Club are uncertain but it is thought that Arthur must have been one of the founder members. Hertfordshire Chess Magazine records that Arthur was active in playing for Stevenage in 1964 and an officer of the club in 1966 as well as regularly playing for Hertfordshire. In 1969/70, Arthur qualified for a county tie, a feat he repeated in 1974/75. Arthur was part of the team that won the Puller Cup in 1976.

Arthur re-joined the club in 1985/86 following retirement and played for the 2nd team for most of the following seasons. Despite his advancing years, he kept up a consistently high standard and his superior end-game experience was particularly valued.

The 2nd team Captain’s (M. Price) report for the 1988/89 season concluded:

“We were also fortunate in having a young chap playing for us who just could not be beaten in a total of 16 second team and Sharp Trophy games. His enthusiasm is infectious, and it gives me great pleasure to present Arthur Gray with this richly deserved memento of a memorable season”.
