e) Hertford & District League. Dave Belton reported that with the demise of Allenbury’s we had only eight league games to play. We finished 2nd with nine points, having won four, drawn one, and lost three of our matches. The League was won by Hoddesdon.
We also finished 2nd in the Rapidplay and 110 and under competitions, but in the Jamboree we were a disappointing 5th.
8 club members took part in the various Hertford & District competitions, with Mark Duggin and Frank Trethewey each achieving a 75% return.
Player of the Year Trophy. Dominic Robinson had won the trophy with an 80% return of 12 points out of a possible 15.
Presentation of trophies
Adam Batson was awarded the Tom Wright Trophy for being the most successful player in the county Under 150 team. As he had won his first three matches, Adam was also awarded his county tie. To complete a triple award, Adam was also presented with a runners-up shield from the final, which Herts lost 7.5 – 8.5 to Lancashire.
Len Jones was awarded the Under 125 Trophy as the successful Stevenage captain.
Dominic Robinson was awarded the Player of the Year Trophy.
Secretary’s report.
A good season for the club, with our three teams entered in the Hertfordshire League all achieving a return of 50% or better. We even have a trophy to celebrate, as our Under 125 team won the knock-out competition, beating Hertford in the final.
The Hertford & District League was reduced in size by the absence of the Allenbury’s club, and with those League fixtures concentrated in two clusters, did not provide opportunity for our players graded under 100 throughout the season as might have been anticipated. Nevertheless, we were competitive in all the Hertford & District competitions without winning any of those trophies.
A number of Stevenage players competed for the county during the season, and we are able to present Adam Batson with the Tom Wright Trophy, which is presented to the most successful player in the county Under 150 team. Adam, playing on boards 1 or 2, won five out of his six games.
During the season, we welcomed Neal Thompson, Chris Campbell, Frank Trethewey and Suren Nair to the club, and we hope they will enjoy many more seasons of chess with Stevenage. 5. Treasurer’s report.
Ken Maynard distributed a statement of accounts for the 2006/07 season.
Ken reported total income of £1,421 against total expenditure of £1,210.18, which consisted of £1,050 for room hire, and £160.18 for affiliation, league and competition fees.
The closing balance in the bank was reported to be £911.93.
Turning to the forthcoming season, it was reported that the cost of our premises for 2007/08 was to be £1,100 for an agreed schedule of 38 Monday nights, from 7.30 p.m. to 11.00 p.m.
It was proposed to purchase five digital clocks in order for the club to gain familiarity with the use of these clocks, and provide the club with the ability to play a match using digital clocks on all boards. This was agreed by a majority vote. Ken Maynard agreed to make further investigation of the digital clocks available, and report back accordingly.
