Lindsay Young's site is building up to be a great source of historical information, including Stuart Beaton's articles on the History of Troon.
Possibly the building of the most historical importance in the area is Dundonald Castle, the favoured home of King Robert II.

The Dukes of Portland have a long connection with Troon. If you are really serious about history, the University of Nottingham hosts an archive of documents on this family, though you can't view them on line. Similarly, you may find information of interest in the UK National register of archives.
Ayrshireroots is a genealogical site which contains some historical background, some pictures of old Troon, photos plus links to maps and books about the town.
