I was really enjoying MAN of the MOMENT at the Phoenix Theatre until, mid-way through the second half, the stage went dark, and the actors were in virtual silhouette. I thought that it was such bad luck to have problems with the lights. It turned out, strangely, that this was intentional.
It was a shame to miss the really excellent facial expressions of Joanna Hicks and Claire Price, and frustrating to watch the most dramatic, and yet funniest scene in the play in near darkness.
This is one of playwright Alan Ayckbourn's best He is invariably witty and sometimes can bring tears to your eyes. In this production by ROAD S he does both in generous helpings.
A delightful sunny set (complete with swimming pool) is another triumph for ROADS' master builders, this time by Alan Lane.
The pace of the first act started off rather slowly, but picked up as the actors settled into their roles. Paul Delaney plays the little man who turns out, despite first impressions to be a giant of a man. Paul is one of this group's best actors, and the success of the play depended largely on his, and Joanna Hicks' excellent performances. She is usually at her best in conedy roles, but in this play she shows she can bring a lump to your throat as easily as she usually makes you laugh.
Claire Price, well padded, is cast as the star-struck nanny, and despite having to play a very touching, scene with her back to the audience, shows she is a very talented actress.
Jane Russell played the manipulative TV presenter, Nigel Patrick her patient producer and Derek Wood , with a good greater-London accent, the obnoxious ex-con, all did well, and Gordon Beard, Cherry Bullock and Simon DeVay were believable in minor roles.
As usual ROADS backstage team ensured everything went smoothly and all was under the direction of Angela Mason.
If you haven't already booked tickets, it may be too late by now, but it is certainly worth a try. The play runs until Saturday 13th.
