Planner's Comments – Phil Newall

For 2009, I tried to make the experience as different as possible from last time by having the event based pretty much in the middle of the estate, parking in a lovely private field just off the main NT car park. The warden, Neil Stevenson, was extremely helpful in providing crossing points, moving cows, and importantly, allowing me a free hand in planning. The advantage of starting all the courses in the middle was that the easier and junior courses could sample the delights of the parkland, whilst the senior courses had a mix of the northern and southern areas with the central parkland. In addition, as there were a few problems last year with the connection between the Pill Farm land and the parkland, I deliberately made this a taped route – I hope you all enjoyed the experience!

As for the courses, I kept them on the long side as Trelissick is generally a runners area with little technical difficulty – there is certainly no TD 5 terrain here! Green, Blue and Brown (and Red) started with a road crossing before heading to the northern area of the map, whilst the other courses went to the south, with all courses having a high public visibility finish in front of the main car park and house.

I had arranged for a poster to be displayed at Trelissick prior to the event, and on the day, three groups of people attended as a direct result of this.

For those who attended, the weather was beautiful and Trelissick looked its best. The heat probably slowed a few people down, but comments were generally good, albeit some runners had a few problems with the map which does need some improvements. A big advantage of Trelissick to other areas is the proximity of good quality ice cream and cream teas – both extensively used by competitors!

Overall, I found planning the event a real pleasure and having it in June seems to make a lot of sense as it acted as a good publicity vehicle for the club and was highly visible attracting some new people.
