John's
accuracy with the map revision, particularly with various features which were
originally not quite in the right place and considerable changes to the path
network allowed me to plan with greater confidence in the prime areas north and
south of the entrance road, and to use these for a large part of the courses. I
hope you didn't get dizzy, but I saw no point in taking you through the grot!
The
trail riders event the previous week did not affect
the path network as we feared it might.
The
distinctive trees south of the road could do with revising for the next event
and I discovered a recent small stone circle that could either be mapped or converted
into a cairn.
Course
lengths (including height) were all within guidelines as were most of the
times. Light Green times seemed a bit longer than I expected, some Orange
runners were quicker over the same first 4 controls.
The
blue and brown leg along the river from 232 (bridge - plank of wood really) to
236 (crag foot) was meant as a test of distance estimation, but some of you
opted out of this by going back up to the forest road and using a path junction
as an attack point to give an extremely steep descent.
Agreeing
on the Yellow course took longest, I'm still not
convinced about the route choice on one leg!

Well
done everybody who defied the weather forecast and came out to enjoy Cornish
weather at its worst. Dick did his best to keep you out of the wet and painful
parts of the area and, with the benefit of SI, was able to make the maximum use
of the best bits of the woods. Welcome to the Edwards family who threw
themselves at a full range of courses on their first event. Congratulations to
Rob Birley who would not give up at his third control on Orange even though it
took him 74 minutes to find it; he'll make a good relay team member! Ticks are
a problem here, so give yourselves a check; Lyme disease can have nasty
consequences, even fatal. Thanks to Dick and John Moody for bringing the map up
to date and thanks to all concerned for a smoothly run event.
