Planner's Comments

I
found planning at Hardhead Downs quite a challenge with such a relatively small
map.
I
quickly realised that the start would have to be on the southern end of
Hardhead Downs because of the lack of linear features on Carburrow
Tor suitable for the shorter courses. This inevitably led to the long walks
from the car park to the start and back from the finish. My next challenge was
to get enough distance for the brown course but with some judicious loops I
managed to achieve a length of 7km. I also decided that it would not be
possible to plan a white course because of the lack of linear features or red
course because of not achieving the necessary length without using Carburrow Tor.
As
expected finish times were fast but it would have been different if the weather
had been less clement.
My
thanks to Ken for his helpful comments, and careful checking of my courses, to
Ivor, who organised the event in his usual unflappable and conscientious
manner, and to Phil who produced an excellent print quality for the maps.
Finally
my thanks to Barry for collecting the controls on Carburrow
Tor and to Bernard Pullen who helped at the start, completed the blue course
then very kindly helped to collect controls on Hardhead Downs. This involved
three return trips to the car park – a distance of at least 7km!

Unfortunately
permission was not forthcoming for use of the land to the west of the River Bedalder, which meant that only Hardhead Downs and Carburrow Tor could be used. Peter’s courses on this reduced area needed
very little tweaking. The restriction
also meant that a new assembly area had to be found, in a field belonging to
Tor House, resulting in a 1.5 km walk to the Start. I want to investigate the possibility of
extending the terrain used to the north, which may allow a different point of
access.
The terrain (except for the S.W. side of Carburrow
Tor), though complex, is highly runnable, which was
reflected in the winning times.
It was a
pleasure to collaborate with Peter and with Ivor, and thanks to everyone else who
helped make this event successful and pleasurable.
