Weight Number 14

Spoke pattern. 2 7/8 inch diameter. 1 3/8 inch height.

Spoke 14 Top

Two rows of canes enclose a pink central cog cane. The first row has tiny dark canes that are almost invisible against the second row with its large and prominent white-centred canes.

A "1-1" pattern is formed by the 12 coloured twists.

Dark blue ground.

I feel an extra comment is worthy at this stage. This is one of the neatest weights of this type I have seen. But why all the dark colours? A few shades brighter and this would have been a really superb paperweight.

Spoke 14 Cane

First of all, let's consider the idea that Vasart canes often had an appearance of "falling over". Well, the central row of canes in this weight demonstrate that feature. So is this a Vasart weight? No, I don't think so.

Each row of canes shows us a different design and each of these designs can be found (in a similar form) in both Vasart and Strathearn weights.

But overall, the crispness of the canes, the darker colouring of many, and the overall setting make me believe this is a Strathearn item.

Spoke 14 Side

The dome is quite flat and the ground fills most of it.

A well formed weight with canes standing proud of the surface but with an even and smooth finishing.

I have already said that I believe this is a Strathearn weight. Well, a Strathearn label attached to the base confirms this view!
