 Fishing on the Mediterranean coast

Fed up with fishing in the British Climate ?

Wet, Cold and Windy ?

Well here is an insight into fishing in the Meditranean.

From Spring to Autumn it is pleasant to live on the Mediterranean coast …and it is also pleasant to fish there : The mild climate, the sunshine, the blue sky and the clear waters are already a good reason to go fishing. So as soon as the good weather arrives there are hundreds of rods along the beaches and the rocky coastline. A multitude of species are attracted by the warm water which attract in their turn fishing enthusiasts from all walks of life who come and try their luck with family or friends. In addition to the climate which greatly favours fishing activities the Mediterranean coast offers many possibilities for leisure fishing.

The easiest technique beside the sea is simple fishing from the rocks for small fish which is traditional in Provence. You need very little equipment to catch your first fish: a hand line or a simple rod, a length of nylon line, a few weights and some hooks and of course a box of worms (esques) to tease and catch rainbow wrasse and other coloured fish around the coast of the Mediterranean. For children these carefree fishing expeditions under the Mediterranean sun are a marvellous introduction to the pleasures of fishing.

More technical, the surfcasting fishing requires the concentration of amateurs of fine fish. At the top of the hit parade of the most sought after species on the Mediterranean coast is the gilthead bream. But this species is not the only one to thrill the heart of the fisherman: its cousins the sea bream and stipcol bream are also highly prized when fishing from the coastline with live bait.

Another mythical fish for fishermen is the sea bass (labrax) which is attracted by natural bait as well as by artificial lures. Sporting and efficient the different techniques of casting lure more and more fishermen to the Mediterranean seashore. These techniques are mainly used for the prince of fish but other species are also very responsive: leerfish, saddled bream, or needlefish cannot resist for long the sight of a moving lure.

Other fish less well known but just as much fun to fish are strepies and grey mullet which live in shoals along the coast and are generally caught by ground bait fishing. Once hooked they put up a good fight which is an exciting experience with a fine line.

For those who are looking for a really thrilling experience and big fish they can try to catch a conger eel fishing by night in zones where the sea bed is rocky. Rarely sought after in the South of France the fielas as they are called near Marseilles are numerous and big catches are not unusual.
