Multiplier Reels

The Multiplier, as its name suggests, involves the reels gearing multiplying the spools revolutions for each turn of the handle.

Spool ratios of 4:1 are usual, up to a maximum of 6:1 for reels used for shore rock fishing.

The reel is always fitted to the top of the rod.

Multipliers were originally designed for spinning with plugs and lures and greatly limited casting distances. However the market now offers models designed specifically for the shore and pier fisherman.

These models designed for shore and pier fishing have evolved to include ball-bearing races and spool control brakes, both magnetic and fibre. These improvements have enabled casts exceeding 300 yards, to be achieved on the tournament field.
