10 July 2003 Time: Day

4.5 lb Cod caught from Balscadden yesterday afternoon ( Wednesday ). No idea of baits used.
A bit strange to hear of cod in Balscadden!!

JK

9 July 2003

Fished Balscadden last Friday and Sunday, Weather was good, overcast with a light westerly 2-3. Fishing is poor at the moment with very few mackeral taken all day, interestingly some caught on the mid ebb with coloured feathers. A lot of small mackeral returned, which is always good to see. A couple of guys fished ragworm for LSDs or Flats, but only managed to get the many pin whiting. The summer madness seems to have peaked for now, in mid June when the shoal came in and stayed around, with only a few anglers braving the rocks now. If I could ask everyone who fishes Balscadden to clean up after them , ie discarded line, plastic bottles, trace packaging etc, as not only is it despicable, its DANGEROUS. A person on Sunday tripped up over some discarded line. Not Funny whilst fishing off cliffs 30 feet high with rocks beneath. Cheers and tight lines. JK.
PS. has anyone been fishing the Bailey lately? If so please post a message.

Went down this evening to fish the last hour or so before low water. Used black lug tipped with mackeral.Cos i had been told a 4.5lb cod was taken last sunday at the match down there. Not so much as a nibble although i think i can claim the shore caught record for weed.Anyway i have had enough of paying thru the nose for the black lug, if there arnt any rag or lug in the shop i am staying in to watch Pat Kenny!!!!

20 October 2003

Fished 3hrs of the ebbing tide at Bray promenade, as part of my ongoing goal to fish new marks. Used lug, squid, mussel, mackeral & sandeel. Caught a small whiting and a pout (my first). Three guys nearby caught a couple of doggies and then a 2.5lb coalie, just as I was packing up.

7 December 2002 Time:Day

Fished form 11 till 3 high tide being about 1.30. It was a day for 100% men, Luke was too hungover to venture out. He was probably right.......Blank.

Not a single bite. Was using mackerel, rag, sand eel and Mussels. Will never fish this beach ever again during the day......I had been attracted to the beach because there was a nice surf on but Luke told that me there are only 12 bass in Dublin Bay and they don't live in Bray. And it pissed rain all morning !!

Carlingford

6 April 2003 Time:Day

Club outing to Carlingford, Sunday 6th. Fished from 10am to 3pm. Full tide was at 2pm. Weather misty and a Northern breeze was blowing (not too strong), we had the best of bait but sadly not one of the 14 fishing had a bite all day. Fished over the incoming tide, tried in close and far out but nothing was biting.

Clotherhead

27 December 2002

Fished for the first time in three years. Fished off the pier, windy conditions, good colour in the water, fished the rising tide and two hours after. Bait was lug and mussel. Blanked!!! Only a couple of Whiting bites seen. I suppose the three seals hanging around didn't help matters! Anyone fished this mark successfully? How?

14 June 2003 Time: Day

Took the two lads with me to fish off "Alby's" rock, between Bullock Harbour and Sandycove. I spent more time helping them untangle lines and replace shock leaders and end rigs, than actually fishing. I fished there last week and took 6 doggies to mackeral strip. This weekend, we gave up on bottom fishing and spun with Eddy eels to a small pollack apiece. The fishing has started, eventually.

Greystones

3 December 2003

Fished 3 hours before high and 1 after. Lots of Cod, whiting and Pollack (I think). All very small though. All caught on Rag and Rag tipped with squid.  Also used Lug and sandeel with no takers.

Paul

9 November 2003

Fished greystones south beach from 4 pm to 10 pm high tide being 11pm. No fish for the first 3 hours, spent time picking weed off line. When wind died down had an enjoyable evening fishing if very slow. Caught 7 fish in all. 5 whiting all between 1/3-1/2lb, one 1/2 codling and similar size rockling. Bait used was mussel, sand eels and mackerel, most of the whiting taking the sandeels. There was a strong current running from south to north along the beach from around 4-7 but my 6oz grip lead was hoding bottom. The wind died down and I was able to change to a normal 5 oz non grip lead which enabled me to get some bite detection. All the fish were caught on a standard 3 hook flapper with snood lenghts of about 16" most of them on the bottom snood. I had been using a bomber rig with the top snood about 3 foot, bottom snood about 1 foot but caught nothing with this.

19 October 2003

Luke Scully and I headed to greystones where we fished from 3-7 high water being at 6. We fished the pier for the first hour using rag and mackerel. The sea was very rough with waves crashing over the pier wall. We caught nothing and did not see anybody else land any fish there bing about 10 rods on the pier. We fished the south beach which should have been promising as night was falling. We caught nothing as bite detection was impossible and every cast resulted in the rig getting smothered in weeds.  I will not fish greystones again during stormy easterlies. If this is any help please submit reports.

Ed Burke

31 May 2003

Fished 9pm - 1:30am.  Fished from the rocks - very calm mild night. Lots of doggies and a couple of small flats.  Most productive was squid.

Paul

19 April 2003 Time: Day

Following my last miserable blank on Greystones south beach, I fished off the rocks between the harbour and the south beach. About an hour before high tide and 2.5 hours of the ebb - pleasant sunny Good Friday afternoon. Fresh lug, frozen sandeel and squid for bait. Again, not a single bite. Where are the fish? Please, someone tell me where the fish are!

To add to my woes, my 525 mag kept bouncing off the rocks - there was a hell of a current going southwards - if the grip weight didn't hold it would pull the tripod over.

15 March 2003

Yourselves but of course we had to forget something, the shelter!Got a couple of bites straight away but got snagged on the shelf.Lost a bit of tackle but then came another bite, which turned out to be a crab! That was the highlight of the night. There was one other angler on the beach near us and he caught a very small codling(6 inches) before giving up and giving us his bait.He told my son the water was too cold and the fish were all out in the deeper water where it was a bit warmer, sounds good so we used that as our excuse for not catching anything(again!!)when we got home.I think we need professional help(just with the fishing!!!!).Frabrown

28 December 2002

Fished greystones harbour with luke and Ed from about 3pm - 10 pm with high tide 6.20. The fishing was excellent with over 50 fish between us, mainly (suicide)whiting aswell as some large dogfish. The fish were caught on rag, mussell, sandeel, squid and razorfish, basically anything. Perfect time & place for novices to get into the sport, enjoy the whiting they'll be gone in a few weeks.

Alby

Howth

9 January 2004 Time: Day

I don't know why I punish myself by fishing here during the day! Managed to catch a single whiting for 3 hours fishing. I know that if I had fished here that night i would have caught plenty of fish!

4 October 2003 Time: Day

Fished Balscadden, Arrived at 12 pm (low water) and fished till about 4. Used mackeral, rag and mussel, and caught 2 of the smallest flatties I have ever seen (about the length of my finger!). My advice? Give Balscadden a miss for a few months!

Steve O'Hanlon

14 December 2002 Time:Day

Fished Balscadden again - sea was a little calmer this time. Bait used was ragworm, peeler crab and squid. Spent 3 1/2 hours freezing my ass off, and only fish was a 6 inch whiting on my last cast. Might try the Bailey Lighthouse next time, as fishing into much deeper water. Will need to wait for the weather to calm down first though.

Steve

8 December 2002 Time: Day

Fished the rocks at Balscadden from 12.30pm-5.00pm, with high tide at about 2.00pm. Sea was huge, 20 feet waves were pounding the rocks. Lost count of the amount of pin whiting caught, approx 30 I guess, with only 2 sizeable fish. However managed to catch my first codling of the year, weighed about 2lbs, and also lost another trying to drag it up the cliff. Frozen peeler crab and rag cocktails took the cod.

19 June 2003

On the beach last Friday evening on the ebb with a beachcaster and spinning rod, using mackeral, squid and rag with the former and rubber eels on the latter. Three doggies and a tiny whiting (which a had a huge chunk bitten out of it by the time I'd got it in) and three small pollack and my first mackeral of the season from the Eddy eel. It was a lovely evening also.

Killoughter

4 May 2003 Time: Day

Fished from 3pm to 8pm Saturday 3/4/03, gale force winds and driving rain from the South made this an outing for the dedicated. We had to navigate the lane first which had become what looked like a test circuit for off road vehicles. We pegged in front of and to the right of the gate and it took what seemed like ages to get everything set up (trying to keep the brollies weighed down took the longest). The tide had just turned and our competition was fished over a falling tide. The first fish to be caught was a Lesser Spotted Dogfish (LSD) at 3.45pm using a one hook clipped down rig, bait was sandeel tipped with mackeral. It continued slow for the rest of the day with a few LSD, Dab's, Whiting and Flounders caught. The rain never stopped all day and even with raingear everyone was soaked right through.
17 fish were caught on the day:-
7 - LSD,  4 Flounders,  3 Dab's,  3 Whiting.
Bait on the day:
Sandeel,  Fresh Peeler Crab,  Mackeral,  Ragworm,  Lugworm.

No one bait was deemed better than the other as each bait caught something and with so few fish caught it was impossible to  judge an overall winner.

Roslare

4 March 2003 Time: Day

Fished Roslare with charlie and Ed Burke on saturday using rag, mussle, squid and sandeel with not even a bite. most exciting thing to happen all day was trying to find a camping Gaz to make some sausages! We later stopped off in Court town to fish the going tide with a few slight nibbles. The fish are obviously still out at sea spawning. I think it should start to pick up shortly.

Luke Scully

2  March 2003

Fished from low to high tide with Chris and Luke. Choose Roslare strand after getting reports of bass. Bait used mussels, squid, rag. Not a bite between the 3 of us and no fish.

Sandycove

14 June 2003 Time: Day

Fished rocks at back of Bullock Harbour for the last three hours of the flood tide.(high Tide approx 11.30a.m.) plenty if action with small pollock (to 1lb) and wrasse to 1
.5lb) float fishing with ragworm as bait.
A few larger pollock (3/4lb to 2lb) caught spinning  - however be prepard to loose some lures as the area is quite snaggy

Tom Doyle

5 May 2003 Time: Day

Fished for 3.5 hr from the rocks between Forty foot and Bullock Harbour over high tide using fresh lug, frozen squid and frozen sandeel. Not a single bite. Again. That's four blanks in a row. Also, to keep boredom away, tried spinning with sandeels and eddyeels. Nothing. Considering going back to golf.

Sutton

8 August 2003  Time: Day

Fished Red Rock at the Martello Tower between 6-9. Despite reports of bass being caught, I didn't have so much as a nibble. Bait was large sandeels and king rag. Baits were being stripped by crabs almost immediately after casting. Might give this place a shot at low tide with some plugs, Pat in Henry's tackle seems to think this is the way to fish here.

Had fished further up the coast here last week (about half way to the Bailly Lighthouse) but all I got were 3 large dogs. Better than nothing I suppose.

Wexford

Fished Rostoonstown at night 9pm high tide. Bait was Lugg tipped with squid. Caught 2 BASS, 1 dog and 1 small whiting. There was a bit of an easterly wind and a good surf.

Paul

Wicklow

8 August 2003 Time: Day

Picked an evening high tide to try the Wicklow beaches for bass. After an hour of plugging, just as I was about to move elsewhere, I got a bite, which encouraged me to stay. A couple of local lads were also there spinning. Again, I was about to leave when I got a very aggressive bite on the plug and pulled in a 2.5 lber. The other two guys changed to plugs after seeing my success, but no more takes for anybody, until I was about to go home, when I thought I would change to a new plug (Yo-Zuri Arc Minnow) just to see how it swam. Lo and behold, another bite, again very agressive with the fish breaking surface, and despite being again about 2.5lb, it put up a good rod-bending fight. So two fish, above min size, to the chagrin of the locals who got nothing. This makes a welcome change from my usual complaints.
