Lorraine

7 December 2002

We fished on the concrete jetty just past Eastney arrived at 9.30pm to catch the 00.30 tide. Started off slowly with a few crabs and 1 whiting and 1 plaice being caught....until about 1 half hour past high tide. Bass came in and they went mad. took rag and mackrel.7 were caught in. all were size limit but only kept 1 for the table a 4 half pounder.other caught were just over 2lbs each. When gutting this fish I noticed in its stomach was full of tiny green crabs. and they were not peelers. not that I've ever wasted money on them. as I have found them no different from normal crabs. so there you go. A good nights fishing in the end for Me.Hubby and H :-)

Gosport

18 August 2003 Time: Day

Millenium pier again, with both sons and one of their friends.  The tide was "strange" - pulling lines out while it was supposed to be coming in!  Pier was quite busy, nothing for first twenty minutes, then one son pulled in a 2lb Wrasse, his friend pulled in a Wrasse of just under 1lb.  All went quiet again, then as the tide turned they were continually unhooking pout, wrasse and pollack, all small, all on rag.  Most people seem to be catching small on there at the moment, and mainly on rag.  Tried live baiting with small pout, but no takers.  The pier is quite busy at the moment (school holidays), but a fun fish - if you can ignore the children shouting "mackerel shoal" everytime a seagull lands on the water, and the resident lunatic fisherman who shouts obscenities at the passing yachts.  No-one yet has the heart to tell him that if it wasn't for the marina, he wouldn't have a pier to fish from!  Still, all in all a good five hours of fishing.

Adam Gale

15 August 2003  Time: Day

Took my two children to Millenium Pier, as they have recently decided to take up fishing.  Tried Browndown, but too much wind and weed.  The Pier produced lots of pout and wrasse, all small but enough to keep them interested.  Couple of small bass came up, then a 2lb bass on rag from the channel which leads out of the marina into Portsmouth harbour.  No big casting at the moment, lots of boats that will take your line away.

Gillkicker

Hmm! Seems the area is definitly in decline. Apart from it being a freezing cold evening, i only managed to catch. 1x Whiting, 1x Weaver and 1x small Pout. High water was approx 17.30hrs and apart from that, there isnt a lot to report about.

Doug

Gillkicker

Turned up at 3.00pm, high water at 5.30pm. It was so cold, my bait froze within 20 minutes !! Stayed until 9.00pm. I blanked but my mate had 1 small dab. I am thinking about giving up on this fishing lark..

Andy

3 January 2003

Wot no Whiting or Cod! Well all i can say is that im starting to believe the theory about Fishing easterly winds. Started off going to Hurst shingle bank, but the Waves were chasing me up the beach. Matters didnt help cause it was a north easterly wind. Bearing this in mind i decided to go to Hasler Wall! The Sea was pretty calm but only managed to catch a few Pouting. Did lose a few big Fish after getting snagged, also it was an extremely cold night. High Tide was approx midnight.

Hayling Island

9 March 2003 Time: Day

Four Bass caught near Hayling island , loads of bites not taken though , afternoon session , taken with ragy

MJH

20 January 2003

Fished from about 4 in the afternoon till about 8ish at the ferry boat did not get a bite, then moved down to the pub on the beach fished that till about midnight not a bite, which was a bit strange after all the gales, the high tide mark had about was 6" deep with slipper limpets must have been millions of them. Geuss the fish must have eaten so many that they could not move :-) .... had a chat with one of the locals he had about the same luck as us ..... but never mind really nice beach to fish and with the chance off big cod and bass all year round still could be a good mark ... will try again at some point ...

24 August 2003

Got to the castle about 5.00pm an gt a small brill about 1 and ahalf pounds  on first cast then it got a bit blowy so moved around to the groynes and about 8.00 caught a bass abou 2 pounds followed by a nice black bream about 2 pounds at about 10.00 then about 2.30 am the rod tip bent over to a whopping sole of about 2 and a half pounds which tasted great by the way. then a very small pouting gave itself up for me about 4.00 am . that was it for that session .. not bad nite though and love fishingthe castle . all fell to rag and squid cocktail

Rob Vought

19 July 2003 Time: Day

It was a hot day with a light wind. we arrived at the castle after the gruelling walk up the spit at about 1pm with a couple of hours to go to high tide. mooose was the first to tackle up with a light spinner. his third cast brought in a mackeral and we all rushed to get the feathers on. an hour later and between four rods we only had 1 other mackerel in the bag. we changed three rods to ledgers and when the squid bait didnt appear to work started using the fresh mackerel 15 minutes later saw a 2 1/2 pound bass landed - damians second fish ever! the tide was really starting to run around the point now. a second bass of  1 1/2 pound was cought on mackerel and we left at about 6pm. A fun days fishing!

Malcolm Woodford

28 December 2002

Fished the Shingle-Bank about 1/4 mile from the Keyhaven foot-bridge.Arrived at 15:30hrs H.W due @ 18:30 hrs-sea coloured and moderate.Had rag/mackeral/squid for bait.

Attended with Bill and Mike-Mike`s first trip for ages so we were all looking forward to wetting our lines!

Mike landed a Bull Huss first chuck,on his normal bass set-up i.e mackeral fillet on a 4/0 running ledger-returned after a photo. This was followed by a large whiting on a rag/mackeral cocktail.Bill and I were "cheesed-off" to put in mildly.

Then the dogfished arrived-any bait with mackeral was snaffled, eventually about 8 were caught and returned, also the odd pout and whiting were landed. At about 20:30 hrs Bill landed a codling after loosing several big-fish close in-over 3lb and gut full of small green crabs,(refer to Lorraine`s report Eastney 7/12/02) .

A good days fishing-we will return!

28 December 2002 Time: Day

Managed to find some time to Fish the Beach section over the Holidays. The conditions were nice and mild for the time of year, even though it was blowing a gale on the open Beaches. High water was around 6pm and all in all i managed to catch five species.

  • Pouting

  • Rockling

  • Bass

  • Flounder

  • Whiting

Only problem with this section is the snags,if you can avoid them the Fishing is non stop. You dont even have to cast out far,to be in with the Fish.

24 January 2004  Time: Day

Mark & Phil caught 6 Whiting, 2 Pout and a small bass. All fish came when the tide was coming in - kept getting snagged after it turned. Fished from 10-4; high tide was at 12.30.

Great venue, but other anglers give us a bad press by leaving so much litter behind. Caught 12 whiting of small to medium size on rag. Snags a pain but interesting spot, always something going on.

Simon

14th June 2003 Time: Day

Me and my friend mike turpin were fishing down magazine lane its a great location if you avoid the snags its great you dont even have to cast out far. but the litter problem is appauling people should take there litter home.

Newhaven

17 January 2004

Myself and a friend fished the East Arm at Newhaven from about 4pm to 8:30pm.  High tide was about 7pm.

We caught 23 fish between us, but nothing of any real note.

we had 8 pouting from between 14 and 23cm in length, all were returned.

We had 13 Whiting, from 17 to 34cms. The 34cm one was kept to eat, and was the last fish caught at about 8pm.

We also had 2 rockling of 18 and 19cms respectively.

We fished a combination of baits: lug, rag, slipper limpet and squid. It's hard to say which was more successful, as all caught.  A lugworm, with a slipper limpet, tipped with a small bit of squid seemed about the best.

Kieron Moorman
