2 January 2004

Fished Pier at 4th shelter 5pm - 3am. HT = 8pm. Caught loads of pouting, whiting and 2 rocks (yes rocks!). Tried lug/squid/lug&squid cocktails but despite loads of big knocks on squid nothing caught was worth keeping. Occasional doggie or rockling caught by others (and even a weaver fish), but generally a poor night for catching. Great night for losing tackle though... Anyone know how to cook rocks?

Soles are in at Dengemarsh. Not far out 60yds. Lug or prawn baits. Usual pout/dabs/rockling also. Lots of small fry close to waters edge, this years brood of skate/bream ect. Large fish chase them in,fry bury themselfs close in to hide predation.

Dungeness

7 February 2004  Time: Day

Braintree Sea Angling Club's latest match gave members the opportunity to head south and fish Dungeness on the Kent coast. With gale force winds coming straight down the stretch of beach in front of the power station, the fishing was moved to where the boats are kept on the main beach.
There were plenty of fish including undersize codling, dabs, pouting, rockling and whiting, with catches of up to 30 fish per angler, although most failed to reach the size limits.
The match was fished on a catch and release basis with Peter Costin claiming first spot with 3 dabs for 80cm. Second place was tied between Barrie Senior and Kevin Thorpe who had 3 dabs each for 77cm. New member, Tim Maples claimed the best fish with a dab of 31cm.

30 January 2004  Time: Day

In a force 5 to 6 south, south west wind the only place to try was by the boats near the lifeboat station. Unortunately I started at low tide and had no fish at all until half tide. Half a dozen Dabs, four Rockling and a Flounder all on Black Lug tipped with either Squid or Sprats at least saved a blank. The Sprats were collected from the tide line where plenty of Starfish and Sea Mice showed how stired up the sea was. Surprise of the day was to see a charter boat come in late afternoon which had been fishing out in the bay. The party on board were all a strange blue colour!

14 October 2003 Time: Day

Fished the point low water to just after high tide (8am to 4.30pm approx.) First 3 hours were very slow with just 1 pout caught. Things then started to liven up with loads of whiting plus a few pouting and dabs. As I was running short on bait I started using a 3 hook flapper with size 4 hooks and baiting it with 1 black cut into 3 pieces plus a mackeral tip and that was coming in with 3 fish almost every cast. I also fished a second rod with various big  baits looking for codling or bass but drew a complete blank there. Fish were still biting when I finally packed up. Lovely sunny day but a strong easterly blowing straight on shore.

HW 7pm-ish, fished 5pm-11.30pm. Caught about 8 mackerel at dusk but didn't have a bite on normal baits in daylight hours. As soon as darkness fell the "whitin just didnt stop bitin". Caught loads of whiting (some double shots but none sizable), a half decent dab, a pouting and a poor cod. Bait was mackerel, lug and rag. Lug and mackerel was the better bait. Stuck a mackerel head and guts on for an hour or so in the hope of a bass but didn't get a knock. Bloke fishing next to me said he had a smoothhound. An enjoyable session.

2 February 2003 Time:Day

The match was fished just to the east of the power station on the point, this provides access to clean ground, fishing from a shingle beach. 5 Members battled with the conditions which forced most to fish with only 1 rod for part of the time. Although there were plenty of undersize fish caught in the first hour, conditions deteriorated and the combination of a Force 5 to 6 south westerly and strong tide run reduced catches over high water.

About an hour after high water the sea conditions smoothed slightly and it was possible to reach the fish again. A cast of aprox 80 yards was required to reach fish but catching anything sizeable was a major problem. Although there were many double and treble shots of dab, rockling and whiting, the only sizeable fish was a dab, caught by Simon Farrow after high water.

Turned up at 8am fished till 7.30pm, excellent days fishing, caught around 60 fish, 3 decent dog fish plus more doggies, nice size whiting, loads of flatties and plenty of pouting. Took 10 home for the table, caught mainly on squid and yellow lug. If your gonna take a drop net, you will need plenty of rope. 1 hour before and 1 hour after high tide cannot be fished properly, tide runs too hard. Can't wait to get back. P.S. I better type this, Daron caught more fish, I'll do him next time.

Got to the warren just before high water, decided to 'plug'.  Started off with a rapala jointed but nothing with that, switched over to a dexter wedge and on the second cast connected with a fish, it felt a nice fish but came off just before I could see it.  Continued for about another hour with nothing, switched over to some 'mackeral hokkai' feathers just before I went and landed a small mackeral on the last cast !  Spoke to two other fisherman who had both caught one mackeral each.....where are the bass !!

Gravesend

9 December 2003 Time: Day

Gravesend Charity Open - the following article was written by Graham East, the owner of Dolphin Angling Centre, 5 Queen Street, Gravesend, not myself, but it was an interesting day to share with everyone. I was in the running for a while with a 42cm whiting, but hey, thats life the cod came in the end. Here goes.............
Cloudy skies and intermittent light rain showers could not dampen the enthusiasm of the 141 competitors who contested the Gravesend Charity Open on Sunday.
The high spring tide brought the fish close in searchof food, where there was a variety on offer from anglers aiming to win the day.
As expected, whiting made up the bulk of the catches with 968 caught, but there were also 2 bass, 14 cod, 1 dab, 8 eels, 21 flounders, 18 pouting and 12 rockling.
One garfish was found in a rockpool by one of the oldest entrants, Ernie Cook, 68, but was ineligible as he caught it by hand and not by rod and line.
All these fish meant a close contest to decide the winners, where Jason White from Dartford emerged successful after landing 26 whiting for a total length of 799cm.
Jason, formerly from Northfleet, paid tribute to the fishing club help he had when a teenager years ago, that gave him the knowledge and expertise to be in contention.
Runner-up was Paul Chapman, with Nigel Bundock in third spot and the three shared £900 in prize money.
New for this year was the introduction of £100 zone prizes, with the main winners excluded, ensuring the money was shared out evenly.
Winiing the promenade zone was Bob Bushell, with the other three zone winners being Glenn Longhurst, Peter Dartnell and Peter Bundock.
A fine crystal goblet, along with a rod and reel, went to the ladies champion, Claire Squires (my best friends missus, she had a smile like a cheshire cat for days)who landed nine sizeable whiting.
Also getting a new rod and reel and a big trophy was junior winner Steven Morphew, with the same prize going to runner-up James Young.
The other 23 youngsters who took part all received a box of lures to encourage them to continue particpating in our nations number one sport.
Best round fish of the day was a 4lb cod landed on the first cast of the day by Guy Strand, who won £160 from the optional pools.
The best flatfish was a tie at 1lb 6oz for both Dave Harris and Peter Bundock, who took £80 each.
Gravesham Mayor and Mayoress, Richard and Samantha Burgoine Smith, along with Suzette Bradnam of Cherished Memories Charity, presented the main awards and congratulated the organisers on another highly successful day, raising £700 for local charities.

I hope you like it, thought it was a very pleasurable write up!!!!!!!!!!!

Fished the beach at Herne Bay, bait used was lug, rag, peeler and squid. Mainly fished the tide up, had two bites but failed to connect !  Loads and loads of weed about, it made it quite hard to fish at times with the line being swept at a 90 degree angle along the beach !  Last cast had a nice bite but there was so much weed on there the line snapped, gutted ! I fish the south east often, especially Herne Bay ( I live there ) so expect quite a few reports !!

Turned up at sun pier at 4pm with a few score of lug and some squid to find half the population of chatham stuffed on the pontoon. Made my way down past the command house to the wall behind lloyds instead. Fished a sleeper rod with whole squid and lug at 60-70 yards and another rod with two hook paternoster with lug and squid at about 45 yards. Nice flattie first chuck on close rig followed by plenty of pout and the odd whiting. sleeper rod was constantly attacked by crabs and probably pout so although the bait was checked every 20-30 mins nothing came to it. On turn of tide changed close rig to pennel crammed with plenty of lug to catch possibly the smallest codling ever. Went back to two hook rig and had another flattie and soem pout and a rockling. Loads of bites all fish returned safe and sound.

Midday til 15.30 - High Water @ 14.57
Started off at Dover, picked up my Xmas pressie, new abu garcia multiplier! Couple of score of rag and yellows (absolutely huge sons)aiming for a Boxing Day trip on Prince of Wales Pier, but the winds were exceptional, very dissapointed. One the way home thought we (me and the Mrs) would try out Gillingham pier, a first for us. Found it eventually, winds still strong, but decided to tackle up a give it our best. Fun from start to finish, great mark, especially if your out with the nippers. Easy access with car, deep water and safety barriers in place. Fish started biting immediately, but choose your hook size carefully. Started off with 2/0 & 3/0, plenty of action, but hooking the buggers was impossible. Change to 1/0 & 1's on a 3 hook paternoster rigs, then the plague of rockling and pouting besieged us. Back to 2/0's after an hour, then the Channel Whiting hit hard, hour and half before high tide. Some beautiful specimens landed, but alas no codling about, plenty of stories by the other anglers, even dogfish & bass caught recently????? Still we had fun!!! Baits - rag, yellow tails, whole squid, mackerel strips, blacks! Worth a try by any means!!

22 October 2003

Fished the Medway City Estate from 7 to 11pm. Cold night but the spot we fished was nice and sheltered from the strong winds elsewhere. River was like a mill pond. First cast (2 hook flapper rig) caught 2 pouting in just a few minutes. Mate turned up and we both fished 1 rod with 2 hook rigs. Lots of bites but no fish for ages. A couple of whiting were caught after about 2 hours then my mate caught a lovely codling. Estimated weight about 4lb. Managed to land it with the aid of a big bucket and long length of rope. Nothing else caught after that. Bait was common lug.

6 October 2003

Had a couple of short trips to the Medway this week. Saturday late afternoon / early evening fished the Medway City Estate. Lots of pouting early on plus an eel and a sole as darkness fell. Tried the Pier at Gillingham Monday evening. Slow start but towards high tide a few nice whiting caught at distance. 6 or so anglers fishing but few catches, just a couple more whiting and an eel.

Reculver

5 July 2003 Time: Day

Parked in reculver car park and walked left along the little promenade and down on to the beach.  Tide goes out a long way here so I had a little time to 'survey' the ground.  Choose to fish about 300 metres along which seemed to have the least rocks.  Got off to the usual start, lost trace and leader 1st cast, 2nd cast birdsnest etc...  About high tide caught a nice bass of about 3lb on lugworm.  Nothing then for the rest of the day apart from a few bites.  Will probably try this venue again, seemed quite good, easily capable of producing big fish including bass, ray, doggys etc.  Watch the high tides here though, water can come right up to the cliff !!

8 December 2002 Time:Day

Just popped out for a couple of hours to fish either side of the high tide. Perishing cold easterly wind meant the bay was deserted... went down the Prince's end, fishing about 40 to 50m out with yellow lug and squid... quite a few Whiting to start with then, just as the tide was turning got a few codling to 2lb. Chuffed!

Seaford

12 September 2003

Fished from low tide up using live prawns, 1st fish was a 2 1/2lb codling (yeeha first this year) then nothing for about 2hrs then it went mad & caught 9 bass one after the other mainly schoolies but two worth keeping. Ran out of prawns so went home & had cod & chips.

24 August 2003

Four of us arrived just after low water and started catch mackeral straight away. Large shoals were moving up and down the beach. They were so close in that some were beaching themselves. One friend got fed up using a rod and just used a spinner on a handline to catch them. Some non-anglers were wading in and using picnic cool boxes to scoop them up. Further out we were catching garfish and scad. We fished until after high water in the dark using squid and mackeral baits but only had a couple of knocks.

26 July 2003 Time: Day

Tried eastern end of beach in heavy rain on late evening tide. There were schoolies jumping close to shore at low water but soon disappeared when it started to rain. Gave up after over four hours of continuous rain. Tried mackeral strips for bass as this worked a few weeks ago when mackeral were chasing fry onto the beach. Sadly only two spider crabs to show for our endurance.

24th October 2002

Pouting are frequently here this time of year all along the beach and have had a small Thornback Ray along Seaford Head.

A few school bass were taken the other night. The largest was taken for a meal, when we opened it up it was stuffed with slipper limpets ... seems to be a good bait for them although larger Bass are falling to whole squid ( with part of a cork to keep it up off the bottom away from the crabs ) and even lures. Both Codling and Bass are to be found around low tide during the day ( might be at night as well but have not fished low tide at night or met anyone who has for a report ).

17 January 2004 Time: Day

My favourite place, so much to see, even if I don't catch anything! Bird life, seals, and solitude!  Fished from 7am, high tide at this time. Trying or a possible late flounder or two. Bait, mussel, frozen sandeel.  No luck at all. Probably too late for flounder now, must have moved out to sea.Lovely sunrise.
