Firstly lets
clear up one myth, there is no difference between a "Shore
Rod" and a "Pier Rod", only the difference in price
that a very few unscrupulous tackle shops may try and charge you.
Rod
length is very important for beach casting. 12ft (3.7m) should be an
absolute minimum. Casting Distance is proportional to rod length. So
the shorter your rod, the shorter your cast!
The rod should be able
to handle up to 6oz (170g) leads, most good quality beach casters are
designed to handle 4-8 oz (113-226g) leads.
Beach casters break down
into two sections by the means of a spigot joint.
The reel is attached by
either "Coasters" for Multiplier reels or "Screw
seats" for Fixed spool reels.
Rods designed for use
with Multiplier reels will be marked with a "M" whilst rods
designed for use with fixed spool reels will be marked "FS"
The major difference
will be the rings. FS rods will have larger rings sited on the
underside of the rod, whilst rod types "M" will a greater
number of smaller rings, because the reel is positioned on top of the
rod, to guide the line along the rod, even when the rod is bent, under
load.
The better quality of
the rod, the better quality the rings will be. Beware of "Cheap
Rods" the rings may rust in sea water and may be built into the
body and can not be replaced if damaged or worn out.
