Ephant was perhaps the strangest looking being in all of Jabba's Palace, which is saying something when all the other vile creatures are taken into account. He is a Chevin, and amongst his own kind on the planet Vinsoth is actually quite handsome. The Chevins were nomadic people, but Ephant had a desire to see the galaxy and fly among the stars. His dream eventually became a reality, and he was a mercenary for a large part of his adult life. He went into the gun-running business, not caring who he sold to as long as credits ended up in his hands. Even the Rebel Alliance bought arms form him. But his break came when he met Jabba, and the two started gun-running together.
Their gun-running days came to an end when their plans for breaking into a large Imperial arms cache on the icy planet Glakka were destroyed by the arrival of snowtroopers, who had been tipped off by one of Jabba's own people. The two managed to survive, but became prisoners of the planet itself. It was absolutely freeing, and Ephant began to die slowly. Seeing this, the Hutt wrapped his oily fat folds around the freezing Chevin, allowing Ephant to survive. When they were eventually saved, Ephant felt he owed a life debt to Jabba, and became one of his most loyal servants.
On Tatooine, Jabba gave Ephant the job of rooting out any conspiracies and assassination plots that were rife throughout the palace. Ephant was very good at his job, often gleening information form the B'ommar monks who shared the palace with the Hutt. Lady Valarian, Jabba's main rival, made attempts at buying Ephant's services, although they were not needed as the Whiphid had several dozen spies in the palace already. But Ephant reaming loyal to Jabba. Under his watchful eye not many attempts were made on the worm's life, but events whirled out of Ephant's control when Leia turned up with Chewbacca, and later Luke. Ephant tried to warn Jabba of the danger, but the Hutt would not listen. Eventually Jabba left to sacrifice the Rebels, leaving Ephant behind.
Destiny did not allow Ephant to go with his master that day, for if it had, the Chevin would now be scattered over the sand of Tatooine. Ephant would go on to other things, for his destiny pointed along another path.
