Gamorrean Guards

Being a crime lord, Jabba needed guards. Those guards did not need to be intelligent, just tough and always ready for a fight. This was why some gamorreans came into the service of the Hutt. The pig-like species originated from the planet Gamorr. It is a nice planet, but has as its inhabitants a species who are always fighting amongst each other, and with anyone else. They live in clans in huge fortresses, guarded by stockades and huge beasts. The clans are led by matrons, and it is these who tell the males to fight, usually from early spring to late fall. Gamorreans entered the galaxy through slave ships, when slavers saw how strong the porcine species were. The gamorreans were immediately used as slave workers, but their violent disposition led to them becoming soldiers, guards, and mercenaries. Those few who went into the bounty hunting business most often failed due to their lack of stealth.

Twelve gamorreans went to Tatooine, having been asked to by Jabba. Upon arriving on Tatooine, they upheld their custom and engaged Jabba in combat. This would mean that each gamorrean would fight Jabba one at a time, but the deceitful worm said that he could take on all twelve at the same time, as long as they were blindfolded. This, he told them, was an ancient Hutt tradition. Believing him, the porcine creatures agreed, and once blindfolded were beaten senseless by dozens of Jabba's thugs. Nine survived, and held Jabba's ability to fight in awe.

The Gamorreans were thought of as only being able to squeal and grunt, and could not understand anything but the most basic of orders. This was not true, as they could indeed understand many languages, but as they have limited vocal apparatus, they can only communicate in the squeals and grunts. One of the survivors was called Gartogg. He served as a palace sentry, but later became a sort of detective. Around the time that the Rebels were mounting their rescue attempt, Gartogg discovered bodies in the lower levels of the palace. This confused him, and he meant to get to the bottom of it. It was lucky for him that he did, for this held him back from traveling with the others on Jabba's sail barge to the Pit of Carkoon.

Gartogg, unlike many others before him, survived his servitude beneath Jabba. He did not consider himself to be free of the Hutt, as he did not have the brain capacity to understand that he was Jabba's salve, but he did know he was free of all the beatings and jeering he had endured.
