Albert John was born and bred in Warnham Sussex, in 1881 he was a 21 year old agricultural labourer. By the time of his marriage in 1885 he had moved to Norwood in the London suburbs and was a gardener.

Mary Jane was born in Llangollen Wales, the daughter of Sarah and Joseph Roberts.
It seems likely that the couple met and courted in Warnham as Mary Jane was resident (in service at a guess) at Warnham Vicarage at the time of the marriage.

The family was raised in the area of Norwood with Albert John working as a domestic gardener. Although, by the time of his death from heart attack in 1912, age 52, he had become a road labourer.

Mary Jane and some of the children returned to Wales. She died there in 1937, age 80.
