John Stanley, "Stan", was born in Norwood, Surrey in 1887.
He was enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment in 1909. He was discharged in 1916 on medical grounds, family lore suggests this was due to shell shock. His record shows 44 days with the British Expeditionary Force. He is described as 5ft 8in, fresh complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. He was resident at Kingston Barracks when he married Emia in 1915.

Stan was an electrician by trade and was involved in the building of the country's first totaliser board at Newmarket.

Stan and Emia raised their family in Wimbledon at 13a and 49 Havelock Road.
13a sat alone in the middle of a quadrangle of roads and thus had a garden on all sides. Your author as a young sprog regarded this as a major asset.

This included a charge of £1-5-0 for "Extra depth to 12 ft". John Stanley was followed by Ernest Payne 18 Mar 1961(husband of his wife's sister Clara) and finally by his wife, Emma aka Emia, 16 Jan 1976.
