Peter was born in Horsham, Sussex in 1787. In the 1841 census he is a farmer in nearby Rudgwick. In 1851 he has 300 acres at Hyes Farm, employing five men and three boys. By 1861 the family have moved to Mill Hill Farm, a mile or so away -115 acres employing three men and two boys.

Son Henry remained at Hyes. Peter ended his days at nearby Warhams, he died in 1865 at the age of 77.

In 1871 his unmarried children Henry and Ellen are still at Mill Hill. In 1881 Peter's grandaughter Caroline and her husband Edward Stone are the residents. Ellen has moved to nearby Arun Villa. In 1891 we find Eliza wife of son John living there.

Son Henry's accidental death was the subject of an inquest.

THE TIMES -11 Aug 1866
Sussex. -A compact and nearly all Freehold Estate of 200 acres, including some rich and most productive river-side meadows, in the beautiful district between Guildford and Horsham.
MESSRS. DEBENHAM,TEWSON and FARMER will sell, at the New Auction Mart, near the Bank of England, on Tuesday Sept. 25th, at 1, the attractive and nearly all FREEHOLD ESTATE known as Hyes Farm, in the parishes of Rudgwick and Slinfold, and about a mile and a half from Rudgewick Station, 5 from Horsham and 14 from Guildford. It comprises about 200 acres of sound and very improvable land, all lying compactly in a ring fence, and having good frontages to the main turnpike-road. About 127 acres are arable, 46 grass, and the residue woodland, with a comfortable spacious farm-house, farm-buildings and cottage. The beauty of the position, and general character of the neighbourhood, as well as the attractive features of the estate, adapt it for the erection of a gentleman's residence and for the formation of a pleasure farm. The river Arran bounds the property, and there is excellent hunting and shooting in the neighbourhood. The estate is now in the occupation of Mr Walder, a yearly tenant, at the old low rent of £125, but possession on completion of the purchase can be arranged for, and the farm will readily command a much higher rental. It has been tenanted by one family for three generations, and has belonged to the present owner and his ancestors for upwards of 200 years. Particulars of the tenant ; of H. Marshall Esq., solicitor, Godalming ; at the inns in the neighbourhood ; and at the auctioneers, 80 Cheapside.

Henry died later in the day. A verdict of accidental death was returned. However, Henry's knife and watch were missing and a Noah Buck was charged with the theft of them whilst Henry lay in the ditch. The evidence was deemed insufficient the case was dismissed.
Two nephews of Henry are reported as giving evidence in the identification of knife and watch.
