Died Feb. 27, 2009
James E. Knibbs, 95, of Roscommon died Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at Mercy Hospital Grayling.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at First Congregational Church of Roscommon, with Pastor Mark Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Maple Forest Cemetery, Maple Forest Township.
Jim was born May 30, 1913, in Frederic to James F. and Ida (Hollingsworth) Knibbs. He moved to Roscommon from Frederic in 1933, the same year he graduated from Grayling High School. He married Iris M. Jones on May 5, 1952, in St. Helen. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked at Mobil Services in Roscommon from 1933-1944 and operated Knibbs Services in Roscommon from 1948-1982. He was a member of First Congregational Church of Roscommon, was secretary for Roscommon Mason Lodge 364 F & AM for many years, and was a life member of Charles M. Engel VFW Post 4159 in Roscommon. Jim helped with the First Congregational Church Food Pantry, and he also helped many people in many ways that were not known to the public.
Survivors include his wife, Iris Knibbs of Roscommon; children, Suzanne Campbell of Manton and Elaine (Gregory) Martin of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Dale (Suzie) Campbell, Caryn Weston, Greg Campbell, Joshua (Beth) Martin and Gabriel Martin; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Laura Bertl of Roscommon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two infant sisters; brother, Leonard Knibbs; half brother, Kenneth White; and son-in-law, Dale Campbell.
Memorial donations may be made to First Congregational Church or Mercy Hospice.
Walsh Funeral Home, Roscommon, handled arrangements.
