Belmont Post Office & Store - c.1903

The General Store and Post Office on the corner of Downs Road and Brighton Road, Belmont was run by William Henry Brain and his wife Mary Ann. We don't know the exact dates but believe it would have been from around 1901 - 1910.

Mary Ann Brain was born at St James' Farm, Clifton, Oxfordshire, the daughter of Thomas Wright and his wife Sarah Knibbs. Mary Ann and my grandfather, Levi George Knibbs, were 1st cousins.

In the distance of the picture, we can see the California Arms, a Public House/Hotel run by Mary Ann's older sister Hannah and her husband Pelton Gibbons.
