From Reynolds's Newspaper (London, England), Sunday, September 6, 1891:
Suicide Through Depression of Spirits.-
Dr. W. Wynn Westcott, held and enquiry on Monday at St. Giles's Coroner's Court concerning the death of Henry Theodore Knibbs, 28, manager of the Royal Standard beerhouse, Little Guildford Street, W.C. The deceased's brother died a month ago, and since then the deceased has been depressed and strange in his manner. He was besides worried about money matters. On Thursday morning his wife, on entering the backyard attached to the beerhouse, discovered her husband suspended by his neck from a ladder placed against the wall. the deceased had driven a butcher's hook into the ladder woodwork, apparently that he might hang himself effectually. Mrs. Knibbs at once cut the deceased down, but life was found to be extinct. The jury returned a verdict of "Suicide while of unsound mind".
