Future Developments
A common factor in implementing security protocols is that, due to limited bandwidth, a trade off is required between the level of security required and the network activity the protocol requires to deliver the said level of security. This often leads to the usage of a protocol in its least secure state (IPSec in transport mode or SSL without authentication).
Streamlining of security protocols to reduce the level of network activity they generate in their optimum settings would increase the likelihood of protocols delivering the optimum security.

At present there is a lot of incompatibility between the different security techniques. In particular the non-acceptance of encrypted messages by firewalls.
The need exists for a form of checking that would allow firewalls to inspect the message properties and establish whether it is a safe format or not before blocking the message.
