I am hardly the most experienced
person to make comment, but I have been diving in numerous places from Central America to South East Asia.
Gilli Trawangan, (off Lombok) was the best place I have dived. Went with Albatross which at the time had the humblest of premises (compared to the others), but had very decent staff. Lombok itself was pretty unfriendly five years ago. I guess that its totally off limits now.
In Mexico I went to Tulum, south of Cozamel. Quite good, but not cheap. (Cozamel is famous for the decapitation of Kirsty McCall).
Nha Trang in Vietnam is a decent place to stay and makes a good break from backpacking. (Its also where the start of Apocalypse Now, was meant to take place). The diving's not bad and the place as a whole is cheap. I used Octopus Diving, they were friendly and provided a good service.
When I went to the States. Unbeknown to me it was normal practice to go diving without a guide, interesting if you've never done that before. If you're on the Keys I would recommend Quiesence.
Regretfully Trincomalee in Sri Lanka got damaged in the Tsunami and the hotel attached to the diving school definitely got destroyed. Not only that at the timing of writing this, theyve gone back to martial law in that region.
Went to Veradera in Cuba, and dived some scuttled Russia patrol boats. That was pretty good.
