Gran Canaria - September/November 2003

Below is a selection of photos which were taken when I visited Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, spending 2 weeks from late September to early November,in what is the start of their wet season. Everything starts to green up after a few months of hot/dry weather,so its a great time to see the emergence of lush green new growth all around, although some parts remain hot and dry thorough the year. The Island has regions ranging from semi-desert scrub land lower down,to coniferous forest and deciduous forests on the higher slopes of what is basically one of a chain of volcanic islands, each with their summits above sea level, that make up the Canaries. The geology and position, which is a stones throw from the west coast of Africa and the Sahara Desert result in a subtropical climate for much of the lower slopes,so it's not uncommon to see bananas, olives, lots of lemons and even the odd avocado being cultivated.
