Shieldbugs
These guys are usually one of the more challenging subjects to shoot that I commonly find in the garden, as they are very timid and easy to scare, especially when they get older! Having said that, I sometimes find individuals that will tolerate having their picture taken at close range (The lens is normally only a few centimeters away). They are also known as "Stink-bugs" in some parts, thanks to their ability to defend themselves from predators by producing noxious smelling chemicals! We have 2 species here, one which is a deep metallic bronze (Eysarcoris fabricii, the Woundwort Shieldbug) , and medium sized(about 1 cm long max.) when they are fully grown adults ,and another which is a little larger(~1.5 cm) and bright emerald green, and not surprisingly called the "Green shieldbug" (Palomena prasina). Thanks to everyone at www.birdforum.net who has helped me with Info for this page!
EGGS
After they hatch, the young bugs, known as "instars" are quite dark in color, but after a few hours they become a light green/yellow color.
FIRST INSTARS
SECOND/THIRD INSTARS
As they grow, their color and paternation changes, and to accommodate a larger body size, they have to molt their outer exoskeleton a number of times before they become adults, with fully formed wings(hidden away behind protective wing covers).
