The Golden Retriever was originally started in the 19th century by the First Lord Tweedmouth by mating a yellow wavy coated retriever, that he saw out on a walk one day and named "Nois", to a Tweedwater Spaniel, called "Belle". The Spaniel was chosen, deliberately to enhance the dog's stamina and strengthen it's swimming ability. Four yellow puppies resulted from the original breeding and one was chosen to become part of the breeding program. He then selected a red setter to become the mate. This breed was chosen to enrich the colour and sharpen the scenting ability. It was also believed that a sandy-coloured Bloodhound was used in breeding hoping that it would sharpen the dogs tracking ability. The Golden Retriever Club was founded in 1918. The breed is now one of the most popular today.
