The young mice are
born with no fur at all and their eyes are shut. The doe
feeds them on her own milk for at least three weeks and
keeps them warm in the nest. Their fur soon begins to grow and in 10 days baby mice of white parentage should have a white coat. Their eyes open in 14 days and by 21 days they are running round the cage. This is the time to wean them, so put extra crushed oats into small dishes for them to try, although they will still go to the doe for milk. The young mice will play a great deal and climb about the cage on the ladder and branches and you will soon have to find new homes for some of them. At 5 weeks of age each buck should
be put into a separate cage and at 6 weeks the mother can
be moved to a new cage, leaving the young does together. |
