FOOD CHOICES

Find out what sort of food your pet prefers. Hide a nut or a sunflower seed, and a piece of bacon quite close to each other. See which is taken first. Does the mouse always make the same choice?

Try different types of food, but try and stick to natural foods not processed foods such as chocolate which can be harmful.

Try putting small amounts of its favourite food in different-coloured bowls. See which bowl it prefers.

If you look after your pets properly, you are bound to watch them, to discover how they live and what they like and dislike. You can find out a great deal about them by planning your observations and putting them in a pet project book

For example, measure how fast your pet mouse grows. Weigh it, measure the length of one of its hind feet and the length of its tail. Does the tail grow much longer as the mouse grows older?

You can make a very interesting pet project book which can include dates when you noted things about your pet, photographs and drawings.

If you know somebody who breeds rats or mice you can watch the development of the babies. Notice how fast they grow, and also how their mother cares for them and is prepared to defend them.
