An adult tame mouse is usually about 80 mm. long with a tail the same length as his body. This tail has no fur on it and tapers to a fine point at the end.

He has quite large ears, bright eyes and long whiskers on his pointed muzzle.

Each hind foot has 5 tiny clawed toes and each forefoot 4 clawed fingers. It is these claws which make the scampering sound on bare floor boards on a quiet night. He is very alert and quick-moving and with his acute hearing and good sight he is able to seek cover immediately danger is sensed.

The mouse is a rodent with chisel-shaped teeth which are kept sharp by wearing against one another in use, so to keep them in good shape he must gnaw hard substances regularly.

He can make high-pitched squeaking sounds and may do so when angry or frightened.
