British Army Records of the Second World War

Although the actual service records for servicemen of the Second World War are not available there are records available that I can search to gain further information on an individuals service. If he or she was awarded a Gallantry award or Honour or example. Also if the unit is know I can obtain details of the actions in which they were involved in as well as their movements during service. Please see the bottom of this page on how to apply for your relatives service record.

HONOURS AND AWARDS

All awards for Gallantry and Honours such as the Order of the British Empire and British Empire Medal were published in the London Gazette. In most cases the reason for the award was not shown. For most of these awards I can obtain a copy of the original recommendation. These give details of the action for which a medal was awarded or the service an person distinguished themself in to gain the award.

OPERATIONAL RECORDS

These are mainly in the form of unit War Diaries. They are original documents, written by one of their officers at the time in the UK or wherever that particular unit was stationed. Most have a monthly return of officer who are all named. They show where they are on each day, details of actions in which involved along with the number of casualties. Officers are often mentioned. Other ranks are sometimes mentioned and in some cases lists of other ranks casualties are included. Apart from War Diaries there are records on Special Operations. These, being smaller units are more likely to show names of other ranks.

SERVICE RECORDS

The records of service for officers who were discharged after 1922 and other ranks discharged after 1920 are still held by the Ministry of Defence. Only the servicemen or women themselves or a close relative can apply for a transcription of the record. If the serviceman or woman is deceased a copy of their death certificate is required. You can apply for a record from Ministry of Defence, CS(R)2A, Bourne Avenue, Hayes, Middlesex. UB3 1RF. If you require further information on an individuals service as stated above in OPERATIONAL RECORDS you can send me a copy of the record you receive so as I can send you a quote.
