A SUGGESTED LIST OF MATERIALS TO START
If you wish to restrict the initial cost the following materials are adequate:
STOUT CARTRIDGE PAPER -12 sheets 14"x10" supplied in a loose leaf book
WATERCOLOUR PAPER - 12 sheets 14"x10" Bockingford 'not' (not hot pressed) 140 lbs. weight, medium surface texture, supplied in a loose leaf book form
A 3 PLYWOOD OR SOFTWOOD BOARD, approximately 20"x15"
MASKING TAPE - one roll 1" or 2" wide
GUMSTRIP PAPER SEALING TAPE - 1" or 2" wide x 35m. long roll, unwind from the centre.
MOP BRUSH can be an old shaving brush, a ladies powder brush free from dust or a soft-haired, 1/2" to 1" decorators brush for example. Any clean soft-haired brush is suitable.
ROUND BRUSH one or two No. 8 or 10. As an extra, a No.5 made from sable and nylon. The best are full-bodied with a fine point for both wide strokes and fine lines. These are adequate for try-outs but it does necessitate regular cleaning with water and damp drying between different colours and tones. A few more rounds can be added with increasing experience.
RIGGER - one only with 1 and 1/2" long fine hairs made of nylon
FLAT BRUSH - 1/2" nylon. Add 1/4" and 1" flat brushes when needed.
BRISTLE BRUSH - 1/4" and 1/2" flats, square ends or tapered for removing colour.
SEVERAL TUBES OF STUDENTS WATERCOLOURS
Ultramarine Blue, Paynes Grey and Raw Sienna. Build upon these as the need arises.
USE 'ARTISTS QUALITY' WATERCOLOURS a.s.a.p. for glowing results
A BOX OF STUDENTS PAN WATERCOLOURS - 12 assorted pans supplied in a plastic box with a hinged lid.
JAMJARS - as water containers.
A SMALL WATER SYPHON OR PIPETTE.
A PALETTE KNIFE.
A NATURAL SEA SPONGE (wedge-shaped) for lifting out unwanted paint..

SYNTHETIC SPONGE as a substitute for a mop brush (clean water only).
BLOTTING PAPER, PAPER TISSUES and an assortment of clean rags for regular palette cleaning.
PENCILS, H.B and 2B and a putty rubber.
MEDIUM SANDPAPER.
A SMALL SHARP KNIFE and a SCALPEL.
Take advice at your local art shop if known, but do not overbuy.
