How
about a little UNIX history...?
So, what is 'UNIX'
some of you are probably thinking?
UNIX is a multi-tasking, multi-user 'Operating System' (OS) - probably
one of the most popular Operating Systems worldwide! It has been
around since the mid 1970's. UNIX is actually a trademark of the Novel
Corporation. Many variants of UNIX still (although not always
correctly) call their OS's 'UNIX'. There are many, many
different variants, all of which have their place in history. The
latest craze seems to be the 'Linux
OS', which you may have heard of? It was originally developed
by 'Linus Torvalds' (a student at the University of Helsinki,
Finland in 1991). He based it on 'Andrew Tanenbaum's Simple Minix
Operating System' (although he did write Linux from scratch).
Linus always intended Linux to be free and 'Open source' so
that anyone who wished, could contribute to it. As a result of this,
its popularity grew very fast and soon became quite a serious OS.
Today, it really is an OS to be reckoned with! It has become quite a
challenge for Microsoft, as more and more people are turning to
UNIX as an alternative OS on their PC's.
My
view: (Guido) My personal opinion is, UNIX is a
far better OS in many ways than even Windows
NT (Microsoft). My other favourite, free UNIX OS is FreeBSD
This has evolved from AT&T's UNIX Operating System. It really
is a fully fledged UNIX OS and very powerful too! I currently,
run 'Version 3' on two web servers and a laptop. Yahoo!
(to name just one large organisation) run their systems on
FreeBSD. Well... that's enough history for now! As time goes on,
I will be posting new and interesting things. However, there are
many great sites out there already dedicated to Linux /Unix. (
