The Grand Canyon

If ever a natural wonder deserved its "Great Wonder of the World" title, it would be The Grand Canyon. Its awe-inspiring, rocky beauty is 277 miles long, 18 miles wide, and nearly 1 mile deep! The weather can vary. The Canyon is in an exposed high-desert region, renown for temperature extremes. From Las Vegas we took a coach ride. It is about 278 miles!

Some other interesting facts:

  • Became a national park in 1919
  • It has a land area covering 1,904 square miles
  • It has a lowest/ highest elevation of 2,400 feet at the Canyon bottom to 7,498 feet at South Rim of Canyon. We visited the South rim.
  • There are about 1,500 flowering plants, 305 birds species, 88 mammal species, 26 species of fish, and 58 species of amphibians and reptiles!
  • There a different sites of interest: The West Rim between Grand Canyon Village and Hermits Rest; The East Rim between the Village and Desert View (this includes the Yavapai Observation Station, the Tusayan Indian Ruin/ Museum and Kolb Studio, and the Desert View Watchtower); The South Rim with the South Kaibab trail and some of the highest elevations (over 7,000 feet).
  • Popular activities include: Ranger-led walks and, hiking, river rafting, fishing, riding on the Grand Canyon Railway, autumn chamber music festival, camping and the mule rides!
  • There are numerous organisations and individuals who work to protect the Grand Canyon National Park; National Park Service (NPS), Grand Canyon National Park Lodges, the Grand Canyon Association, the Grand Canyon Field Institute, The Grand Canyon National Park Foundation, and the Grand Canyon Trust.
  • Those, who are brave enough, can fly through the Canyon by small aircraft/ or helicopter. This is the most expensive option (because of insurance), but definitely a must!

Never been to the Grand Canyon? Let me take your there! ... Just CLICK on my photos and imagine ... (Think of an eerie calm, but with an occasional breeze):

Next time we plan to take the mule ride through parts of the Canyon itself. The ONLY way to really experience it, is to catch The Grand Canyon in all its beauty and at all times of day/ month. There are four main rim-to-river hiking trails and one rim trail. You can take the one day and over night mule ride/ or longer trails. This would be a lifetime's opportunity (not to mention getting some more fabulous shots!). You stay in one of the many chalets deep in the Canyon, like the picture below. This shot was taken at the end of the zoom!!:
