What is Reiki ?

Reiki is a Japanese word that means 'spirit-guided life energy'  1 & is an established spiritual practice not a religion. Reiki is non-denominational so is open to all.

There are many different branches of Reiki as it has become one of the fastest growing complementary therapies in the western hemisphere.

The principles of Reiki are:

  • Just for today, do not anger

  • Just for today, do not worry

  • Just for today, count your many blessings

  • Just for today, do your work honestly

  • Just for today, show love & respect for every living thing

 How Does Reiki work?

The Reiki practitioner uses 'intention'  to channel life - force energy;  acting as a conduit for Universal (Rei) energy (Ki) .

Studies have shown that human intention can be used as "an extraordinarily potent force". 2

Reiki is a simple and natural technique that means literally “universal life energy”, which is transferred through the hands of the practitioner who has received training from a Reiki Master during which they become “attuned” to Reiki.

All forms of energy therapy such as acupuncture, homeopathy, reflexology and Reiki are believed to work by stimulating the body's ability to clear energy blocks, restore balance and promote a general sense of well-being.

Reiki is used in all age groups, has no harmful side-effects and can be used alongside other therapies & conventional medicine.

Individual people visit Reiki practitioners for many reasons; often following the recommendation of other satisfied clients who have experienced Reiki. (see testimonials)

Anyone can be attuned to give or receive Reiki.

Maggie Bevington  is also a Reiki Master practitioner & teacher, having begun her training in Tibetan / Usui Reiki in 1998. She previously worked as a Community Nurse within the NHS for 20 years.

What happens during a Reiki Consultation?

Reiki is a non-invasive “hands-on” therapy for mind & body, which is done whilst you are fully clothed - although you may be advised to remove shoes, outdoor clothing & jewellery for comfort.

The Reiki practitioner places their hands gently over or on specific areas of the body. Direct contact should exclude intimate areas such as the breast & genitals unless for conditions directly affecting these areas, where consent is given in writing prior to a consultation.

Reiki can be given whilst seated or lying according to preference and mobility. Both positions are equally effective: some feel more relaxed lying and others more aware sitting.  Please state your preference if known on booking, if not - try both and see which suits you best.

Both clients & students visiting this practice have reported  feeling  warmth, coolness or a tingling sensation during Reiki sessions / training & many experience a deep sense of relaxation or even fall asleep during Reiki.

It is important to be aware that because Reiki is believed to release, activate & transform energy, clients may notice changes in how they are feeling. This can be a necessary part of the process as suppressed emotions and blocked energy are released. Rest and drinking plenty of still, pure water will help this process and even a short session can help for quite a while although 3-6 sessions are usually required to achieve the best response. Always consult your Reiki practitioner if you have any concerns or questions about Reiki.

A full Reiki session usually takes 30 to 60 minutes but even a few minutes may help. Please be aware that your first consultation can take up to 90 minutes to enable a full case history to be taken. Follow-up appointments take 30 to 60 minutes, according to individual need. Charges are £45 first appointment and £35 follow up.

Joint Therapy

Reiki complements many other energy therapies, especially homeopathy. Initial homeopathic assessment is best done separately to enable a full history & remedy prescription. If you would like to receive a joint therapy session for Homeopathy & Reiki at your follow up appointment , please state on booking. These are charged at £30 per hour and usually last for 11/2  to 2 hours according to individual need, so would usually cost £45 - £60.

Free Introduction to Reiki Evenings

On  free information evenings, you will also receive a taster session from a Reiki student or practitioner. Then if you enjoy / benefit from the experience you can book an appointment or train to use Reiki yourself.

If you would like to find out more about Reiki therapy or training, & for future dates, please contact Maggie.

Courses / workshops and Reiki training are available at May Bank Homeopathic & Reiki Practice. (follow the link - dates for your diary)

Reiki Training

Complementary therapies are generally aimed at empowering you to managing your own health & I particularly enjoy teaching individual's how to use Reiki for themselves.

There are 4 levels of training in Reiki :

Level l: is an introductory level which enables individuals to use Reiki for themselves & family / friends /pets.

Level ll: teaches extra techniques such as distant transmission & can be used for self & others.

Level lll (master level): is for advanced skills & required before becoming a practitioner.

Level lV: is required for teaching & attuning others to Reiki.

If you would like to book an appointment or are interested in Reiki training please contact Maggie - also check out the dates for your diary link.

Research Evidence

There is much anecdotal evidence in support of Reiki but it can be difficult to 'test' in the same way as in conventional medicine because the linear approach of 'double blind placebo tested' trials does not easily lend itself to 'measuring' the whole person. NB. many allopathic drugs are not either.3

There are many CAM (Complementary & Alternative Medicine) practitioners all over the world who are working hard to demonstrate the value of various complementary therapies.

Dr. Nick Bayliss states in his brilliant book called "The Rough guide to Happiness" :

"Conventional Western medicine & psychology do not have a monopoly on healing the body & mind or helping them develop from strength to strength....for example, in Japan small magnets are sewn into mattresses to heal chronic pain while you sleep; in Germany mainstream physicians are licensed to prescribe herbal medicines for depression, not just pharmaceuticals; and in The Netherlands doctors can suggest to hyper anxious patients that they do a week or two of physical outdoors work on "therapeutic farms. As the French say 'Vive la difference!"  4

What I can tell you for certain is that Reiki works for me!

Testimonials from Clients at May Bank Homeopathy & Reiki Practice

"I first received Reiki from Maggie about 10 years ago. I found that the energy transmitted through her hands whilst practising Reiki improved my overall well-being, so much so that I went on to train in Reiki myself.

I experience Reiki energy as heat which travels wherever it is needed in my body or enfolds my whole body. I always experience a release of tension, a feeling of safety, nurturing & well-being. It is a wonderful experience.

I have always had an improvement & positive change in my health & well-being after Reiki. I would definitely recommend others to experience Reiki first hand." L.S.Coleing

"I started my Reiki training with Maggie in 2006. I found her to be very professional & informative, with an enthusiasm & unending passion for helping others. She is always approachable & very supportive & I have thoroughly enjoyed & appreciated having her as my teacher.

As on-going training she holds Reiki shares for anyone involved in Reiki ...on a regular basis where we can all learn from & support each other too. I would happily recommend Maggie as a Reiki teacher." P.H. Miller
