Cheat For VGA Version
For lots of money, repeat this a few times. Go to mushroom patch, and pick up lots (and I mean LOTS) of mushrooms - the letter sent to me says to put a paperweight on your enter key. Go to healer's hut and give them to her. After a few, she'll start to refuse, but that doesn't mean she won't pay you for them anymore...

Character Creation

The Best Combination
Become a thief. Put 5 points on parry, 5 points on magic, 10 on intellignece, 5 on agility, 10 on vitality, and 5 on luck. You will need to train this charcter, but he will become a force to be reconned with. This character needs a little more training than most, but his versatility definitely pays off.
I've found this chracter to be highly successful throughout the series. See the tips for the various character classes below, and follow them. Avoid fighting monsters at the beginning, as you be be quite weak, and unable to defend yourself. Once you've got a bit of training in, and learned some decent offensive spells, however, hack away.

Fighter
Add 20 points to Strength. Add 10 points to Agility. Add 10 points to Weapon Use. It's very important to read the section on "The Fighter" in your Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School manual. Then practice with the Weapons Master and work in the stable daily. Fight monsters at every opportunity. Buy Healing Potions and drink them. Sleep in the Magic Meadow.

Magic User
Add 10 points to Strength. Add 15 points to Agility. Add 5 points to Magic. Add 10 points to Intelligence. Add 5 points to Vitality It is very important to read the sections on "The Magic User" and on "Common Everyday Magic Spells" in your Famous Adventurer's Correspondence manual. Then get all the spells as soon as possible and practice them whenever practical. Avoid close combat with tough monsters by casting the Calm Spell, the run away. You can buy the FLAME DART spell, the FETCH spell, and the OPEN spell at the Magic Shop. You can obtain the TRIGGER spell from the Hermit, the DAZZLE from Erasmus, the CALM spell in the Magic Meadow, and the DETECT MAGIC spell from the Meeps.

Thief
The Thief lives by his wits, travels by night, and runs away from monsters! Add 10 points to strength. Add 10 points to Vitality. Add 10 points to Weapon Use. Add 10 points to Agility. Add 10 points to Luck. It is very important to read the section "The Thief" from your Famous Adventurer's Correspondence School manual. You must think "sneaky". Explore the town at night, try to pick all locks. Most important: buy a Thief Tool Kit at the Thieves Guild.

General Hints

Spend the first 2 days climbing, and so on. Train with the weapons master at the castle daily (ask about sword and skill). Save the game before fighting the weapons master, as defeating him can have unpleasant consequences. Earn money by working at the stables and whenever you sleep, sleep at Erana's Peace. On the other hand you could work at the stables at sunset so you'll end up sleeping there. On night you visit Baba Yaga, DON'T sleep until you give her the mandrake root. Buy spells at magic shop. Go to the guild of adventurers and talk to the Guildmaster as well as looking around.
Everyone in Spielburg seem to be worried about the Brigands, and they certainly dangerous! Every time you meet somebody, ask about the Brigands, the Brigands Leader, and the Brigands Warlock. There is a lot to be uncovered... But there is more going on here, and a deeper plot.

Earning Money
You may work in the stables, sell Spell Components to the Healer, defeat the Goblins and Brigands in combat and search their bodies for coins. You can defeat the Ogre and the Kobold and take their treasure. Rescuing the Baron's son will also net you a nice reward.

Storyline and Tips
The Baron Stefan von Spielburg is Lord of Spielburg Valley. He angered Baba Yaga when he ordered her to leave Spielburg. She cursed him and he soon lost his daughter, then his son. Now the Baron will not leave his castle or see any visitors. If you rescue his son, you will be permitted to see him.

Monsters

The tougher you are, the tougher monsters you will meet. I'll run through them in order of 'ardness.

Goblins
The Goblins are easy opponents - fight them to build up your Strength and Weapon Use skills before taking on something really scary. Don't forget to search your opponent's body after you kill it. If you are a Thief you can always run. If you are a Magic User, cast a spell at them.

Sauruses (or should that be Sauri?)
These are easy prey for any budding Conan. Hack at those bastards.

Brigands
As your fighting skills develop, these foes will be useful sources of training and money, rather than the dangers they were at the beginning of the game. If you want to build up your skills, thse are well worth fighting.

Mantray
Only the strong will be able to defeat these airborn terrors

Trolls
You will only meet these at night, but unless you are very strong, RUN. If you do manage to kill one, remember to search them, and grab a bit of their beard.

Cheetaurs
See trolls, except you're more likely to run into them during the day. Remember to get some of those claws.

Saurus Rex
See trolls and cheetaurs. Keep stabbing at them, and try to dodge their deadly jaws.

Night Gaunts
These Lovecraftian horrors only attack those foolish enough to sleep out in the open. The best place to sleep is Erana's Peace (the magic meadow). You can also sleep in the stables after working there at sunset, the Hero's Tale Inn in town, in the Dryad's Wood, or with the Hermit.

Let's Meet the Locals

The Local Swine
When you enter the town for the first time you will see the Sheriff and Otto, sitting around not doing much. Ask about the brigands, heroes, adventuring, and just about anythingelse that comes to mind.

The Inn
The Hero's Tale Inn provides good food and a safe place to eat.

The Magic Shop
Zara will sell you spells and potions 24 hours a day.

The White House on street 2
Granny sleeps out on her front porch, and only a thief will have any further use for her general existance.

Adventurers Guild
You can learn about the local fauna plus check out work opportunities.

Fresh Produce Stall
Heidi the centaur sells fruit and vegetables from her father's farm at a stall behind the Sheriff's office. Buy apples 5 times (you'll need 'em later).

The Dry Goods Store
Sells Daggers, Chain Mail (buy later), Rations, Flasks (buy 2 or wait until you have empties from potions).

The Purple House
The Sheriff, his wife, and Otto live in the purple house, but only thieves will ever know what's inside it.

The Alley
During the day you will find a begger who will only speak to you if you show charity. He can tell you about work at the stables, and about the brigands, plus a couple of other things. At night everyone except thieves should avoid the place. Thieves should enter the alley at night, and make the thief sign to it's denizens.

The Seedy Tavern
The thieves guild is in the basement, guarded by Crusher the goon. Tell him the password to get in (you'll get the password from the alley at night).

Other Locations & Side Quests

Map Of The Local Area
Castle | Centaur ------- Healer-- Forest Graveyard Spielburg Spielburg | Spielburg Spielburg ------- Gate ----- Road Target |

The Town Gate
A thief called Bruno hangs around here. He will tell you a lot of things for a price, but not all of them are to be trusted. The gate is closed a night, but you can climb over the wall to get in and out, and to further enhance your skills.

The Centaur's Farm
The centaur can tell you about when the brigands captured him, and of the kindness of the bringand leader.

The Healer
The Healer will buy Spell Components from you, help you make the Dispel Potion, and sells potions for less than Zara at the maigc shop. She can also tell you more about the centaur and the brigands. She will buy back empty flasks for 1 silver each. There is a tree outside which makes great climbing practice.

The Healer's Ring
The healer has lost her ring. It was actually stolen by one of her pet Pterosaurs, and is in a nest in the tree outside her house. To get the ring from the tree cast Fetch or Flame Dart at the nest; climb the tree and walk along the branch; or get rocks and throw them at the nest until the ring falls. Knock on the Healer's door. Give ring.

The Castle
To enter: Ask Karl the Gatekeeper about brigands. Ask about daughter. Ask about son. Ask about curse. Open gate. Karl the Gatekeeper can tell you about the castle, the Baron, the Baron's son and daughter, Yorick, the stable, brigands monsters, hero, the valley, the graveyard, Baba Yaga, the hut, the curse...
You can train here with the Weapons Master in the central courtyard, and you can earn money and sleep at the stable to the left.

The Target
You can practice dagger throwing here, and can get the password for the brigands' secret entrance later in the game.

The Graveyard
Baba Yaga's curse also lies upon the restless spirits who haunt this graveyard by night. Don't get too close.

The Hermit
'Enry The 'Ermit lives near to the waterfall. To get to see him, you can get some rocks and throw them at his door (3 hits on it) until the Hermit opens up. Otherwise you can try climbing up to his door (at the center of the rocks) or cast the DETECT MAGIC spell. Remember to knock three times and get out of the way.
The Hermit will offer you a safe place to sleep for the night and a round of cribbage. Ask the Hermit about the Brigand Warlock, magic, Erasmus, the magic mirror, the Reflect spell, and the Trigger spell (he'll also be very happy if you ask him about all his family).

The Goblins
There is a Goblin camp W of the town, and although it may be hard to get them to confront you, the infinite supply of goblins make great hack 'n' slash practice and have quite a bit of cash on the in general.

The Fox
Follow the road from the town up to the avalanche blocking the road. Go back until you reach a screen which now features a trapped fox. Examine fox. Free fox.

Thievery
This is the easiest and most efficient way to get money in the game, but you need to be a thief. I'd advise doing this as soon as possible.

Meet The Theives Guild
Visit Spielburg at night and enter the alley next to the dirty tavern. When you are caught give the thief sign. Enter the seedy tavern and tell Crusher the goon the password (obtained in alley - shwertfisch in my game). In the guild go to the window and buy a license and a tool kit if you can afford it. If you are a non thief then you should buy a lockpick at least.

The Chief Thief's Game
Once you are a registered thief, ask the chief about the game he's playing, and play it with him a couple of times. Initially you'll win some money; but when you start betting too much, he decides to teach you a lesson - time to stop playing.

Stealing From A Sweet Little Old Lady
Go to the old lady's house (next to Magic shop) and pick the lock (until it opens). Sneak. Take candles. Search basket and get pearls. Look in sofa. If the cat (Sylvester?) causes trouble just stroke it, but don't give it to much encouragement or it will turn into a giant panther. If you want a laugh you can lift the cover on the bird cage. Leave.

I Robbed The Sheriff (But I Didn't Rob The Deputy)
Now go to the other side of town, sneak, the pick the lock on the purple house. Get music box (you have to do this twice in the VGA version - don't be put off). Open drawers. Get candles. Get vase. Go to the thieves' guild and sell everything you've stolen.

Baba Yaga and the Mandrake Root

Brauggi
An ice giant needs food, namely the apples you bought from the fresh produce stand in town (you need either 40 or 50). Go to the end of the eastern road out of town, then go north. Talk to Brauggi and bargain. Give apples.

The Skull
Outside Baba Yaga's hut, ask the skull about rhyme and about deal. Yes. Give gem.

Baba Yaga
Stay near the gate and say 'hut of brown now sit down'. Go into the hut and move once. Answer yes to questions.

The Mandrake Root
In the evening wait in the centaur's farm (safe from monsters) until the middle of the night. At about midnight go West then South. You will enter the graveyard at the top of the screen near the mandrake. Just go near it and get root. You should be fine. If you don't move you won't be attacked. Once you've got the mandrake root run to the witch's house once you're out of the cemetery.

Erasmus the Mage

The Gargoyle's Questions
After climbing the massive ascent to Erasmus's home, you will be confronted by a gargoyle, which will ask you 3 questions. You have to answer them all correctly, or you'll be sent straight back to the bottom of the hill.

Q: What is your name?
A: (take a wild guess as to what you type now)

Q: Who are you here to see?
A: Erasmus

Q: Who's spell protects the town?
A: Erana

Q: What is the Baron's first name?
A: Stefan

Q: What is the Thieves Guild password?
A: Don't know (they don't want any thieves in the place)

Q: What is your favourite colour?
A: Purple (well, it's Erasmus' favourite colour anyway)

Q: What is your quest?
A: To become a hero

Q: What is meaning of life?
A: Life is a bowl of cherries

Q: What is the mean airspeed of an unladen swallow?
A: Can't help you there - it's a quote from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. You could try the answer from the film, which is "european or african?"

Once you're in, go straight up the stairs. Erasmus and Fenrus will supply you with information and some terrible jokes. Ask Erasmus about Erana, about the Protection spell, about Baba Yaga, about curses, about countercurses, and about the Magic Mirror. If you know Flame Dart, Open, Fetch, and Trigger you can play the Mage's Maze. If you beat him, he'll teach you a new spell called Dazzle, but you will need a serious number of magic points to have a chance against him.

The Baron's Son

The Ogre
If you go up and the right from the screen below Erana's Peace, you will find and ogre gurading a cave. You can kill the ogre (remember to open his chest), cast Calm and walk round him, or sneak past him. Go into the cave.

The Bear
Inside you will find a bear. In actual fact a Kobold wizard has turned the Baron's son into a bear.Give him some food (not too close or you will literally be feeding him). He will now let you past. Go through in to the next room.

The Kobold
To dispel the enchantment, you will need to get the key from the Kobold (sneak over to him and steal it, kill him or cast Fetch) and unlock the chain around the bears leg with it. There is also an invisible chest full of treasure to the south of the Kobold's room. Cast Detect Magic to find it, or just try and bump into it. You can then break it, cast open on it, or pick the lock on it.

The Dryad and the Dispel Potion

The Seed Spitting Spyrea Seed
This is the first thing the dryad wants before she does you a return favour. Either throw stones at the seed, cast fetch on it, or climb the rocks and then catch it.

The Dispel Potion
Say yes to the dryad twice. Get acorn.

Green Fur
Visit the meeps. Ask about scroll. Get scroll. Ask about fur. Ask about green fur. Get fur.

Flying Water
Go to the waterfall and put water in flask.

Flowers At Erana's Peace get flowers (three times). While you're there spell casting characters might as well cast Open on the grave and get the scroll, if you haven't already done so.

Mushrooms and Fairy Dust Go to the mushroom ring. During the day you can get mushrooms here, but at night, it is revealed to be a fariy ring. Dance. Ask about fairy dust (shouldn't that be Angel Dust? Fairy Liquid?).

Making the potion
Go to healer. Give fur, give acorns, give water, give mushrooms (three times), give flowers (three times), give fairy dust. Exit. Return and get Dispel potion

The Baron's Daughter

You will need to have the dispel potion made up and be prepared for the endgame before you actually go into the main fortress.

The Secret Entrance to the Fortress
Find the note on the floor in the Tavern (near the oozing bar stool). Spy on Brutus and Bruno from the sides of the target practice area at midday. Go round to central area and kill Brutus to get the key. The entrance to the fortress is near the Bouncer that Hops (the Antwerp). The Antwerp is basically harmless, so ignore it. Search the rocks for the keyhole, then use the key. Say the secret word (hiden goske in my game), and can enter the passage. The exit at the bottom of the screen leads to the fortress, but if you go left at the bend, you will reach the trolls lair. Kill the troll, search him, get some of his beard, and search in pile of junk to find some treasure.

The Not So Secret Entrance to the Fortress
This can be found somewhere to the east of the the Antwerp. Don't go near the place unless your fighting ability is ip to scratch. Lots of archers appear at the sides of the valley and shoot at you. Ignore them. When you reach the logs at the W side of the valley, drink a health potion and a vigor potion to prepare for battle; then climb the logs. Here you will have to kill three brigands.

The Minotaur and the Gate
There are again several ways to get in to the fortress. You can deal with the Minotaur by killing him, sneaking past him (on the left side of the Fortress), or casting Calm. You can then force the gate, climb the wall behind the rock on the right hand side of the screen, or casting Open on the gate.

First Room
Go around the barrier to the left (or you can step over the rope by the right hand barrier) and go across the right bridge (with cross here written on it). Approach the exit at the centre and "Step over the rope".

Brigands Feast Hall
As you enter the room, shut the door. Block door. Go over to the chair near the door on the right wall, and block door. Push candles. Move to the center of the table, wait until the lead brigand starts to go round the table the table, then climb on table. Go to the door on the north wall and open door.

The Funhouse
Ask about Yorick. Go along the right walkway, then go left. Go through the door. You will come out on the right hand walkway. Save. Carefully go down the walkway. Go through the the door in the purple wall. You will come out in the upper gap ont eh left side of the screen. Pull Chain. Save.Go back through the gap. You will return to the right hand ledge. Go up to the door at the northern end of the ledge (the one you tumble through if you fuck up). Open door. Save. You will be on a different bit of the left ledge. Face the northermost door on this side. Open door, and get out of the way when it starts to shake. Once it falls open door again. You will go through to reach the Brigand Leader's room.

Brigand Leader's Room
When the Brigand Leader leaps over the desk use dispel potion. After Elsa leaves, go to the desk and get the mirror. Get the Healing potions. Exit the room behind the treasure chest on the east wall.

Defeating Baba Yaga
Get the Magic Mirror from the Brigands Leader's room. Then go to Baba Yaga's hut (you know the routine) and use mirror. When she casts a spell at you it will be reversed back on her.
