General Information

Party Members
You start with the usual suspects: Iolo, Shamino, and Dupre.
You will need to get Sherry, Lord British's rodent friend, to join you at some point because you need her to get something. She can be found wandering round Castle British at night, and you'll need to give her some cheese if you want her to join you. She's a very weak character, so you may not want her with you until you need her.
In Serpent's Hold you will meet Seggallion, a character from Origin's 'Knights of Legend' who has very high strengh.
Sentri, an old friend of the Avatar's, is also at Serpent's Hold, and is again a good character.
In Yew you will meet your friend Jaana, a fairly weak character, but pretty hot with a magick bow, and possessing some magical abilities (a rarity).
In the inn in Buccaneer's Den are Leodon and Leona, who are both average fighters who have some equipment of their own. Leodon has some magical ability.
Julia in Minoc is an average fighter (but you'll need to equip her). She'll happily join you but will get seriously pissed off if you tell her to leave. Try not to get her killed, as you'll need her help later in the game.
The gypsy boy Blaine (part of Zoltan's roaming band) will also join you, but he's hardly the best character in the game, and will also throw a sulk if you ask him to leave.
Iolo will be thrilled if you get Gwenno (also in Minoc) to join. She's a good character, with fair magical abilities.
Katrina in New Magincia is also a reasonably good character (and don't forget her weapons and armour in the trunk in her house).
There is a fighter named Gorn (a recurring Ultima character) in the dungeons below Sutek's castle. He's another useful character.
Talk to Beh Lem, a gargoyle outside Dungeon Hythloth when you learn Gargish and he will join you. Not only must you have him in your party for part of the game, but he's an excellent character all round.

Recomended party:
You, Iolo, Shamino, Dupre, Gwenno, Seggalion, Gorn, and use the 8th slot from Sherry and Beh Lem. Sentri is pretty good character to have in the party when there's no one you need.

Karma
Karma is apparently important in this game. To maintain and increase Karma, do not steal, return the rune of honour to Trinsic, return the jail keys in Yew, do good deeds (such as settling differences between the undertaker and grave digger at Empath Abbey).
Stealing, pickpocketing & killing will cost you Karma Points. You started out with 75 Karma Points, and you need only this much Karma to finish the game. Talking to each of the 8 shrines will give you 10 more Karma Points. Pickpocketing an item costs you about 5 Karma Points. Stealing costs you 1 point. Killing intelligent lifeforms will cost you Karma points as well (e.g. killing some of the winged gargoyles in gargoyle town).
There are a couple of occasions when you have to lose Karma. For instance, you're going to have to lie to the guy in solitary confinement in Yew in order to learn where the rune of Justice is, which will cost you 2 points of Karma (but returning the key to the jailer will give you a couple of points).
Karma seems to go up when you give a dragon's egg to the chef in Serpent's Hold, and the dragon's egg isn't removed from your inventory in at least one version of the game. Karma can thus be increased to 99 very quickly, and infinitely replenished, which gives you a bit of leeway with the thievery.
Another way round the Karma thing is to cast Animate on a desired object, "kill" it, and then pick up it's "corpse".
I've drawn up a rough chart based on what I know about Karma points, but there may be some errors.

Maximum Karma Points99
Basic Karma Points75
Talking to each of the 8 shrines+ 80
Stealing (includes casting Pickpocket) -1 per item
Lieing to the prisoner in Yew-2
Returning the keys to jailer in Yew+2

You can use [Alt] 213 to check your karma. You Karma is the first two digits of the number which will come up. For information on what the rest of the numbers are, check out the Cheats section.

Healing
Lord British heals for free. Later in the game, after a couple of false starts (let him keep trying), the Gargoyle healer will heal you for free. There are healers in the major cities (most of whom charge a high price for their services), and you and other characters in your party able to use magic (such as Jaana) can cast healing, curing, and later even ressurection spells.

Keys
Let's get one thing straight. One of my pet hates in RPGs is juggling keys. With this thought in mind, I've compiled a list of as many of them as I could get my hands on. Keys are idetified by letter in the game.

ACastle British
ELoubet's Key
GJail in Yew
HJail in Yew
IJail in Yew
JJail in Yew
KSolitary Confinement in Yew Jail (prisoner stole Rune of Justice)
LBeyvlin's Tomb (Rune of Humility)
NStonegate Key (Vortex Cube)

Combat Hints
In combat put invisibility rings on all of the party and the monsters will not see them and will leave. This is also pretty handy for getting through large dungeons full of powerful monsters (the Trinsic Dragon Cave, for example).
Magic bows are incredibly useful items, doing 20 points of damage.
Casting Help while your party is still alive costs you nothing but a little time, but casting it after someone's died will cost them experience points.

Unexpected Commands
  • Casting Dispel Magic cures poison.
  • To put spells in your spell book, just drag them on to it, as if to put them into a container.

    Bugs
  • There is an apparent bug in some versions of the game which put up a message saying "Lord British poisoned". When this happens, Lord British is nowhere near his castle anymore, presumed dead.
  • Things can disappear at random from your inventory. I had a moonstone vanish on me (the only one the cheat menu doesn't appear to be able to produce a replica of) just before I needed it to finish the game.

    Experience
You can repeatedly go into the sewers in Castle British. On level one (two below ground floor) are several cyclops, trolls, and headlesses. If you kill them they gennerally regenerate the next time you return to the level. You can kill them over and over again for money and XP. The is a similar situation with some trolls under bridges near Yew.

If you haven't bought a magic unlock spell you'll have to do as follows: stand by the window and hit space bar (Pass) until you see him come out of his room (only two times the whole day). As soon as you see him, talk to him. He also sells staffs. There are very much are worth the price if you can cast the Enchant spell. You can store up to ten spells in a staff at a time, and anyone can cast the spells at any time by USING the staff.

    Wisps
In the Spiritwood you'll see the wisps. Talk to them. Ask them about their secret. They'll give you the 8th level Armageddon spell, in exchange for you showing them the Book of Lost Mantras (from the Lyceum library).

    Theft
Okay, so it's extremely un-Avatar-like, and it plays merry hell with your karma, but stealing most definitely makes your life easier. And you know what they say - property is theft.
The main thing to beware of when stealing is being seen, as you will be chased and attacked by the town's guards. They seem to cool down after a bit, so just spend a few days away from the place where you stole. If the guards knock you out, you will find yourself in the jail in Yew. At this point, you may want to contemplate whether not buying that explosion spell was such a good idea after all. Casting Help should get you out of the ugly mess.

    To Rob the Royal Mint
    a) Enter the mint at night.
    b) If you have the 5th level Explosion spell stay behind the counter and cast it on the locked door.
    c) If not, then give one of your party a powder keg and select him/her as your single player.
    d) Drop the powder keg in front of the door and use it.
    e) Leg it over to the rest of the party.
    f) When the door explodes you can just walk in and pinch the loot.
    g) Next day sell the nuggets back to Terri at the mint for tons of cash.
N.B. THE CHESTS ARE MAGICALLY LOCKED

How To Steal & Only Lose 1 Karma Point
Keeping your Karma score up is essential to the completion of this game, but stealing makes life a lot easier. To steal with little impact on your Karma, simply move all the items you want to steal into a bag on the floor next to them, and then pick up the bag.

    Equipment
You have nothing but your ankh and the moonstone when you arrive in Britiannia (you can't help but wonder how the locals deal with adventurers wandering stark bollock naked around the countryside....). So where do you get some gear?

    Free Stuff
Taking some of these items constitutes theft.
There are free potions and weapons for the taking in Castle British, including a lightning wand in Nystyl's chest.
If you want some free reagents, and a couple of other things, you can patch up relations between the undertaker and the grave digger at Empath Abbey by just telling one what the other said until they are both happy, and will be rewarded with the earthly remains of some of their clients.
There is a glass sword, among other nifty things in the catacombs in Moonglow.
The guard rooms in Trinsic are full of magic armour and weapons (but remember what we said about stealing).
You can get some potions at the Lyceum, and I seem to recall that there are a useful few odds and sods in their Library.
In Nicodemus's house there are two secret rooms full of potions and reagents (one behind crystal ball, the other in his bedroom). There are a couple of Storm Cloaks in the game. One is in the pirate's treasure, the other in the chest of drawer in Jaana's house in Yew. As Jaana is a friend and companion of yours, your Karma will not be penalised.
You have to take off your armor to wear a storm cloack. When being worn it acts like a negate magic spell, preventing any magical spells from being cast, including the magical abilities of monsters such as daemons, a winged gargoyles, and dragons.
Negate magic (in any form, including the cloak) in no way inhibits the use of wands, rings, or staves.
The thief Phoenix in the Britain dungeon also has some glass swords (you can Pickpocket them off her).
If you want unlimited gold and bolts, take an excursion to Serpent's Hold. There you can use the cannons to blow away guards and you can take their stuff! Note: this is not counted as attacking them since you did not use the weapon directly so they will say nothing.
In Trinsic, go to Lord Whitsaber's house and blow open the locked door. Among the honourable Lord Mayor's possessions are a load of torches and 600 gold. You're very likely to get the guards on your tail with this little heist.
You can get free weapons, food, etc in the Gargoyle city, once you're allowed to wander around freely.

    Shops
    Britain
The armorer in Britian has no magical armor of any kind. He'll buy used equipment for half it's sale price.
The fletcher in Britian can sell you, for 300 gold, magic bows which do 20 points of damage.

    Trinsic
Brandon, the armorer in Trinsic, is the only person who sells magic armor and helms. Brandon is also one of the few armorers who will buy two-handed hammers.

    Yew
The armorer in Yew is the only place in which you can buy swamp boots, footwear which will prevent you from being poisoned when you walk through swampy terrain. Please note that they in no way confer immunity to poison from creatures.
The armorer in Yew will also buy throwing axes from you.

    Serpent's Cove
This is the only armorer who sells magic shields.

There's a cave in the mountains to the west of Jhelom...talk to the sailor with the hook for a hand.

In the Dry Land, the big desert to the east of Britiannia, there are ant holes which lead down and down and down...all the way to a treasure room where you'll find a bunch of dead bodies.

    How to Kill Lord British
Get a Glass Sword and sneak up on LB while he sleeps. Whack him with the sword. The program will say that you have slain him. He should be standing up after you have killed him. Nothing else though.

Ultima IV - The False Prophet
    COMPLETE SOLUTION

    The Runes
To free the Shrines and get the moonstones you will need the runes and mantras. Using the mantras to medite at Shrines is the only way you can cash in your experience points to gain levels and abilities.

CompassionThe child Ariana in the conservatory in Britain has the rune of Compassion but you will need to ask her mother's permission.
JusticeThe rune of Justice is under a potted plant in the Slaughtered Lamb pub (talk to the mayor and the prisoner in isolation).
SpiritualityMarney in Skara Brae has the rune of Spirituality in her hope chest.
HonourThe rune of Honour is in the Trinsic town centre on a pedestal (talk to the mayor about it, and bring it back after use for more Karma).
ValourThe rune of Valour is in a rat-hole in the Blue Bottle in Jhelom as you will be told by the fighters and the girl who does waitressing there (send Sherry the mouse in for it).
HumilityThe mayor of New Magincia will give you the rune of Humility if you can tell him who the most humble person in New Magincia is (it's Conor).
SacrificeYou can only get the rune of Sacrifice if you are a member of the Musicians guild Minoc then you can get it off Selganor. To join the guild get wood from Yew (the woodcutter in the forest - he is at 27N, 16W) and have it made into pipes by Julia in Minoc. Then go to the guild hall and play Stones (6789878767653) to the Selganor.
HonestyThe rune of Honesty is a pain to get: In Moonglow lived a man called Bevlyn. He had the rune. Unfortunately he has ceased to be. So go to the tavern. There you should meet his cousin (bloke with the Codex tattooed on his forehead - can't miss him). Ask him about Bevlyn and say you have visited the tomb. Ask for the key. You will be given a key and some flowers. Now go the sawmill at the north of the island, where the mage Xiao lives. Enter her room and cast Magic Unlock on the magically locked door to enter the catacombs (you can apparently also get here via the secret door in the Blue Boar). You can search the bones for useful items, including a glass sword. Keep going down until you reach level 3, the tombs level. Find Bevlyn's tomb (it's got his name on). Put the flowers by the door and unlock it with the key. Search the bones to find the rune of Honesty.

    Joining the Theives Guild
In Buccaneer's Den, behind the tavern (move the cauldron for a secret door), is the headquarters of the Britannian Thieves Guild. Ask Budo about it. You will then be told to get a belt from Phoenix in the Britain sewers. Enter the sewers via the ladder in the west wing of the castle. Then go to the ladder at 8S,11E. Go down to the second level using the ladder at 0N,7E and head north to 12N,19E. Here you will find Phoenix. Talk to her, then cast the Pickpocket spell to steal her belt. You can now go back to Buccaneer's Den and join the guild. You can optionally kill Phoenix, but it's really unecessary.

    The Pirates' Map
The edgy Homer (in the inn in Buccaneer's Den) will only tell anything to thieves guild members. He will now tell you how to get the map pieces. Get the dragon's egg (from dungeon Destard, NW of Trinsic) for Sandy in Trinsic and he will tell you that both he and the mayor were pirates among other useful info. If you ask the mayor of Trinsic about pirates, Alastor Gordon and Sandy you will get a map piece. The gypsies with a permanent camp near Trinsic can sell you a map piece. There is a dead pirate on the third level of the anthill in the desert south of the ant on a pedestal (the Queen ant, for what it's worth) with part of the map by him. Somewhere between Serpent's Hold and the mainland there is a small group of islands, on which there is a shipwreck with another map piece. Head to Serpent's Hold by sea, taking with you a gold nugget, a magic gem, and a curved heater shield (they've got snakes on). In Serpent's Hold look for Korunda. Ask him about the guild and a shield. Now go the blacksmith's and get Gherick to make you a shield with the three items. Now go to the pub. Near here is Morchella's house. She will trade you part of the map for the shield. Go to Dagger Isle. On the northern side, ringed by mountains lives a hermit. Go to his house, move the harpsichord, go down the ladder and search for the map piece. Go to Minoc then head to Dungeon Wrong across the bay in the mountains. Go to level two, look for a lever, cast Telekinisis on it, go back west and climb down the ladder at 40N, 27E. Get rid of the hydra and go through the secret door in that room. In a room at the end of the corridor you find is a piece of the map. Use a skiff to get to the Dungeon Shame (23S, 20W) on the end of the mountain range surrounding Britain. Go down a couple of levels and look for Ybarra. Ybarra poses a bit of a problem. He is very hungry, but if you feed him in exchange for the map piece he just eats all your food. If you don't feed him, he collapses and you don't get the map. What you have to do is cast a Pickpocket spell on him and just get the map piece. Now you just have to go back to Homer, make a deal with him, and he will give you the final map piece. Lay the map out on the ground to read it.

    The Treasure
It is on a small island to southwest of Buccaneer's Den with 3 stones in northeast corner. Walk 3 steps south, 9 steps west, 12 steps south. DIG! (59S, 50E). This will reveal a hole that you can enter. Explore this area (which has many traps) until you find the sign: "Drop to your Death", choose the hole that has a gold nugget next to it to find the TABLET. Return to Buccaneer's Den and give Storm Cloak to Homer. Return to the Lycaeum with both parts of the tablet and talk to Mariah.

    Sutek's Castle
Blow up the castle door (Explosion spell or powder keg). Cast Telekinisis on the crank. Move the decorative sword and shield. Open the secret door. Go east. Look for another secret door on the western wall. Move the left and middle lever In the room to the right and the right lever to the left. leave and take the right-hand door. Look for a secret door on the north wall and go through until you reach the hydra. From here you should go and talk to Sutek (secret door to the north of the hydra room). Have a look around (the chest in his room is a mimic, by the way). When you're done do through the southern secret door in the hydra room. Go down the ladder. When you get to the switch room use the switches on the walls ONLY. Go south, climb down the ladder. Look for a secret door. Go east, go down, follow the corridor, go down. Near here is a body with the map. By the way, have a word with the Pushme-Pullyou for a laugh.

    The Balloon
Sin 'Vraal in the desert will mention that they know about flying in Minoc. If you ask around there you will find out about the balloon. Look in the dungeon of Blackthorn's castle (now Sutek's - see above) for plans saying how to build a hot air balloon. Michelle in Minoc can make you the basket. You can get a rope from Mortude in Paws and Arbeth can make thread out of spider silk. You will need to get Charlotte the Weaver in New Magincia to make the cloth. Once you have the cloth you must go to Paws to have it made into a bag by Marrissa the seamstress. Once all this is completed, visit the first level of the sewers below Lord British's castle to get a cauldron. Once you have everything you can just use the plans. Once you have the balloon the fan you found in the pirate's treasure will come in handy (it changes the wind direction).

    The Gargoyles
Go to 64S, 72E (near the northern desert). Beh Lem will tell you to see Captain John. Go into the dungeon near you. Talk to Captain John and he will teach you Gargish. When you know Gargish let Beh Lem join your party. You must then visit his father.Turn yourself in to Lord Draxinusom when you are advised to (tell him 'sacrifice' to make him believe you). You can now talk to all the Gargoyles. You can get free food, healing and weapons here. Naxilator, the gargoyle sage will tell you that Sacrifice, to gargoyles, can mean one of three things: self, others or valuables. When asked which you wish to sacrifice, answer "value". Eventually he will ask if you wish to destroy the Codex, answer "no". He will then suggest returning it to the void.

    The Gargoyle Shrines
Visit the Gargoyle shrine of Singularity (by balloon, through the mountains) to find out where the other shrines are. You can go to the shrines (one to the east of the Gargoyle city, one to the west, one to the south) on foot or you can use the Orb of the Moons. You will find out the mantra UNORUS after completing all of the tests. Use this at the alter of Singularity and you will be given a quest to go look in the Codex.

    The Gargoyle Lens
Go to the Gargoyle Hall of Knowledge (read all the books, etc) and get the broken lens there. Talk to the seer. He will tell you to get the lens fixed and to have another made. Talk to the Gargoyle Lens Maker and get him to fix the lens. Now return to the seer.

    The Vortex Cube
Now go to Stonegate (take a skiff along the shore from Minoc). Talk to the boy you meet at the shore. Go into the keep. Get a fishing pole. Go to the shore and catch a fish. Give the fish to Papa Cyclops. He will give you a key. Go into the keep's dungeon and go down (there are also some secret doors and switches to press) you will eventually reach a locked door. Use the key you were given. Get the Vortex cube.

    The Britannian Lens
If you don't have a glass sword get the glass maker in Minoc to make you one. Now go to Moonglow. Go to Ephemerides ask him about a 'lens'. He will offer to make a Britannian lens in exchange for a glass sword.

    End Game
Go to the Isle of the Avatar. You can now go to the Codex. Put the moonstones into the Vortex Cube to power it. Place the gargoyle lens half way between the purple flame and the Codex and the Brittania lens half way between the blue flame and the Codex (beams of light will focus on codex when you do it right). Then put the Vortex Cube, with the moonstones in it, in front of the Codex and use it.

    Cheats

    Time Cheat
[Alt] 215 causes an hour of game time to pass. Useful when you're waiting for someone to return to their place of business.

    Movement Cheat
[Alt] 213 will give you a series of numbers, which will include, most usefully, the co-ordinates of your present location.

    Example: 7510260170161
    75=karma
    1026=time
    017=X co-ordinates
    016=Y co-ordinates
    1=plane
The location given is at the Shrine of Spirituality

[Alt] 214 will allow you to use the X, Y, and plane (Z) co-ordinates to go instantly to that location.

NOTE: This function can cause the game to lock up.
When this key combination is pressed (assuming it works) it will allow you to look at the the portraits and inventories of all the characters in the game. You can also, crucially, talk to them.
If you want to cut out a fairly large section of the game (not that I can really see why anyone would want to) then ,when you get to a character named Gorn, talk to him and have him join you. Then after he has joined switch to his solo mode. You should find yourself in an underground cave in Suteks (Blackthorns) Castle. There is a dead body down there. Search it and take the balloon plans. Then switch to your Avatar character and cast "Help" to get everyone back to Lord British's Castle.

    Cheat Menu
To Iolo say spam (enter) spam (enter) spam (enter) humbug (enter) to access the cheat menu.

Choose option 1 to get items. Every object in the game has a different number, some of which I've listed below. I'm not entirely sure how the quality option affects most items (although it drastically changes some). Quantity is, obviously, how many you want. Some item numbers will produce bits of scenery, as opposed to useful items. Everything you create with this menu will appear in your inventory. If you don't want what you get, just drop it on to the floor and leave the area briefly. They'll be gone when you return.
