Kathleen has been a member of the Progressive Players, with short gaps, for fifty-five years. In her younger days she played many character parts - Irish housekeeper, French maidservant, etc. While working away from the area she played for the Garforth Drama Society and on returning to Gateshead worked with the Pentland Robson Drama Group while also acting in plays and pantomimes with her Church Drama Club. More recently she played Mrs. Bradman in "Blithe Spirit" and Rose in "Caramba's Revenge"; she also enjoys playing "voices off". Under her direction we had "Waiting in the Wings" in 1974, "Present from the Past" in 1996, "The Petition" in 1997 in which she finally had to play when the leading lady took ill, and "House on the Cliff" in 2001. In addition, she has prompted too many plays to remember and done "Front of House" duties. During this time she has taught Speech and Drama at home and in schools with some success, even directing a specially commissioned opera. Many of her pupils have won trophies at Ryton Festival for Music and Drama where she is now the Speech and Drama Secretary, and some students have progressed to professional acting and teaching drama. |
