Houses on one side were demolished together with all those on Bernard Street, the road nearer the camera. The area was formerly home to many workers who migrated into the area, especially from Ireland, and although many of the houses had only 2 bedrooms some were home for more than a dozen people.
The roofs of Surrey Street can be seen beyond.

Liberal Hall, situated on the corner of Edward Street and Railway Street the building now has commercial and residential uses.
