Pictures of the Glossop area

On the main A57 where the trans-Pennine trail now crosses, looking towards Glossop. The row of houses, called Melandra Row, was formerly attached to a mill at the far end. A second row behind was called Back Melandra and was demolished in the 1960s. The railway joined the Hadfield works to the main Manchester-Sheffield line. Apart from 2 larger houses at the far end the rest had a front room and kitchen downstairs with a landing bedroom at the back and a bedroom at the front. Lavatories were outside and shared by several houses. These houses were lived in until the 1970s.

Here is the full picture - this was a special train, it was not a passenger line.
The road had to dip to allow traffic to fit under the bridge consequently it flooded regularly as the nearby R.Etherow overflowed at Woolley Bridge.

Taken from Melandra, (near the Roman site), the houses are Back Melandra and Melandra Row beyond. Woolley is in the background on the left. The farmland in the background is all housing now.

Up the line towards Hadfield, the crossing near the Pear Tree Inn. Lees St at Woolley Bridge can be seen behind the train.
