Quarrying - Glossop Low

A number of ancestors were quarrymen and worked, amongst other places,at Glossop Low Quarries; situated above Old Glossop and with a good half hour climb to reach them. The Greenwood family were the last to work them in the 20th century.

Now overgrown, the walled track still leads from Old Glossop to the Low Quarries.

Horses were used to transport stone down and had to be used to hold back the weight as it moved downhill.

Old Glossop can be seen below in the background.

Your morning walk to work; once you reached the end of the town, you had a mile and a half up this track with a climb of over 700ft.
