LIST OF HOTELS and REFUGES ON GR10 WITH SOME COMMENTS AND ALSO REMARKS ABOUT THE DAYS' WALKS
As explained elsewhere on GR10.co.uk only Hotels or Guarded refuges that provide meals are listed.  However, a few Gites are mentioned.  If anyone finds a web address URL for hotels where one is not given please let me know it.

FIRST HALF:   HENDAYE TO BAGNÈRES-DE- LUCHON                                                    Return to HOME page

A.  BASQUE SECTION                                      Click on the thumbnail pictures to enlarge them,  then use you BACK button

Hendaye/Biriatou There are lots of hotels etc in Hendaye but alternatively  stay at Hotel Bakéa 00 33 (0) 5 59 20 02 01 , http://www.bakea.fr/home/index.htm or Larretcheko Borda (05.59.20.20.32) http://www.hotels-basque.com/larretxeko-borda/ at Biriatou  If doing the latter my suggestion is to take bus to Hendaye on the day you arrive and walk back (2hrs).  The walk goes past the motorway and is otherwise quite built up so doing it this way gets the suburban bit behind you and you can then start straight into the hills the next day to Olhette or Sare.  The Bakéa is delightful and has a lovely dining area under plane trees and an evening here, with the moon rising over the hills, will be one you will remember all the way along GR10!  olhette.JPG (112360 bytes)

Olhette  Gite D'Olhette  http://www.balades-pyrenees.com/gite_de_olhette.htm  On a farm, it has separate rooms or apartments. Good meals.   Or  Sare  Hotel Arraya  05.59.54.20.46. http://www.arraya.com/

Ainhoa  Hotel Oppoca  http://oppoca.com/at Ainhoa (05.59.29.90.72)

In this section there is an extremely steep descent after Col d'Espaiza.  This part would very difficult in wet conditions and a diversion is recommended.  (At Col Méhatché leave GR10 staying on road N then E; after 200m take R fork following track down to Bidarray.)

Bidarray
    Hotel Noblia, Bidarray
(
05 59 37 70 89)  http://en.toprural.com/ficha/fr.cfm/idp/ds/ids/24277.htm.  A pleasant village hotel but at the lower end of the village, by the station, away from GR10.  Gite Ibarla Borda   05 59 37 71 80 - Mobile: 06 12 30 02 10  http://gite.ibarla.borda.monsite.wanadoo.fr/ or Gite Aunamendi  05 59 37 71 34 or 06 07 64 05 40 http://www.balades-pyrenees.com/gite_aunamendi.htmare are probably nearer to GR10.iparla1.JPG (161145 bytes) (The Hotel de Pont d'Enfer is closed)

Next to come is the first long and high day of GR10.  A superb ridge walk with stunning views along  the Pyrenees to the East.  Make sure you have your binoculars and camera ready for the day as it is probably the best day all along GR10 for seeing vultures and eagles as they nest in the cliff you walk along the top of.

St Etienne de Baïgorry   Hotel Arcé (05.59.37.40.14) http://www.hotel-arce.com/  Probably the best hotelarce.jpg (213732 bytes)  all the way along GR10.  A superb stay with a chance to dine in the riverside outdoor restaurant under views of the castle and the Roman bridge.  Justifiably quite costly.  A less expensive alternative recommended by a reader is L'Hôtel Juantorena (05.59.37.40.78) http://hotelrestaurantjuantorena.fr/

Savour the summit of the small mountain called Monhoa as GR10 does not take in another summit until the far end of the Ariège!

St Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port   There is a wide choice of hotel and other accommodation.  Please see list at  http://www.terre-basque.com/upload/fichiers/hotels007.pdf

The route described here to Chalet Pedro is along the old GR10.  We took this in order to even out the days' walk.   This walk starts with a morning shared with the Santiago de Compostella pilgrims which adds a bit of interest.beherobie1.JPG (147409 bytes)

Béhérobie (old GR10)   Hotel des Sources de la Nive (05.59.37.10.57).   The hotel, which is very pretty and isolated,  has a pool which is rather tucked away.  You dine actually over the river.  Béhérobie is on the D301 above Esterencuby above  St Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port http://routard.reservit.com/reservit/fiche_htl.php?userid=8209d85434380e674f20a44987325c9cc8eb&hotelid=2458  The alternative is to go on the current GR10 to Esterencuby Auberge Etchegoyen (05.59.37.09.77)  or Hotel Andreinia Larramendy (05.59.37.09.70) http://www.hotels-basque.com/hotel-andreinia/

The walk takes you right to the Spanish frontier with a short part actually over it.  You pass a rarity on GR10
which is granite way mark posts!
(see picture) Very smart and luxurious.  Quite a long forest section.
chaletpedro.jpg (118972 bytes)

Chalet Pedro (05.59.28.55.98) http://www.iraty.chaletpedro.com/ or Gîte d'étape at the Foret d'Iraty Complex
(bookings at 05.59.28.51.29) Chalet Pedro is principally aimed at long stay visits so you do need to
check with Isabelle if you are planning a short stay.  Very clean accommodation with meals in the café

Larrau    (via GR10 variant)   Hotels Etchémaïté (05.59.28.61.45)  http://www.hotel-etchemaite.fr/ , a very comfortable Logis, or Despouey (05.59.28.60.82) (2.5 Km on from Logibar)

St-Engrace  Auberge Elichat (05.59.28.61.63).  In our view one of the gems of GR10.  Has a gite and also astengrace.JPG (78949 bytes) "hotel"  section but all eat together.  A very pretty place which until the recent road was built was called "Le Bout du Monde".    St Engrace>>

B.  BEARN SECTION

Arette-Pierre-Saint-Martin    Refuge Jeandel (59.66.20.46 and 59.66.20.68) http://www.refuge-jeandel.com/ at Arette-Pierre-Saint-Martin or taxi to Hotel Salies (59.88.90.78) at Arette.  A ski resort where the hotels are usually closed in the summer months.

A beautiful days walk with lots of interest.  A rockscape calls for some tricky route finding.  You are rewarded with a wonderful view at the Pas d'Azuns

Lescun  Hotel Pic d'Anie (59.34.71.54), Lescun http://www.vallee-aspe.com/hebergement/pic-anie/  A superbly built small hotel/gite/shop.  The wood panelling is unique.  This is allegedly the prettiest village in the Pyrenees but we can not confirm this as it was shrouded in fog during our visit!

An easy days walk.  You go past the very unusual mountain pasture Lhers valley and a call in at one of the farms that sell milk, cheese etc is an eye opener.  There is a short cut between Etsaut and Borce

Etsaut (via Borce)   Hotel des Pyrenees (05.59.34.88.62). http://www.hotel-pyrenees-aspe.com/   A large place for such a small village probablyetsaut.JPG (69839 bytes) due to the old railway to Spain that once ran through.  Monsieur has a very good table.

This is one one the famous days walk on GR10.  It takes in the amazing Chemin de Mature and then some wonderful scenery.  Look out for the natural "garden" near the Cabin de la Baigt de Saint-Cours and the marmot colony near the Col de la Hourquette de Larry.

Gabas   Hotel Vignau (05.59.05.34.06) at Gabas or Club des Pyrenées   http://laruns.haut.ossau.free.fr/eda2.html.  A hotel that is well known in mountaineering circles (and monsieur will probably know if Hourquette d'Arre is open).

Make an early start (i.e.  before dawn) on this leg as it is long and strenuous. You also need to check that it is passable as snow is found very late.  In 2004 it was impassable in early July!  Don't head for the lake you see at the Hourquette d'Arre (2,465 metres) as it is in fact a false col.  You have to continue up and leftwards.  We took 12 hours on this one.

Note on possible diversion:  The maps show a trail heading North off GR10 about two hours into the walk after Gabas and this trail then goes over the Col de Lurdé 1948m and then on to Eaux-Bonnes (which is near Gourette).

Gourette  Hotel Amoulat (59.05.12.06).  The only hotel that is open in the summer at this skiing resort. http://www.ot-eaux-bonnes-gourette.fr/hebergement/Amoulat/Content.htm

C.  HAUTE PYRENÉE SECTION

Quite an easy day.  The road section takes you along one of France's best road views.

Arrens   Hotel le Tech (05.62.97.01.60).  A simple but friendly village hotel

This is a really pleasant short walk through a very beautiful valley (after an Arboretum).  Give yourself an easy day and relax and enjoy it!

Lac d'Estaing from Arrens    Hotel Lac d'Estaing (05.62.97.06.25)http://www.balades-pyrenees.com/hotel_lac_estaing.htmWell worth a stay if you do not go on further.  A very remote small hotel.  Very nice indeed.  See the paintings done by the patronne.

Cauterets  Hotel Lion d'Or (05.62.92.52.87)  http://pro.wanadoo.fr/hotel.lion.dor/   Newly renovated.  Excellent rooms - some in a different building to the reception areas.

A good days walk.  Regrettably, you will not find a café or restaurant at Grust.

Note:  For an amusing account of the section from Luz St Sauveur to Sentein by Alan Jardine please click

Luz-Saint-Sauveur   Hotel Les Templiers (05.62.92.81.52) at Luz-Saint-Sauveur.  http://www.hotellestempliers.com/ Since we stayed there has templier.JPG (108807 bytes) been a change of ownership. The hotel is just by the famous Templar's church.

An easier day but not without plenty of interest.  The stream crossing Gué de Boulou can be tricky as would be testified by the naked Frenchman who was drying his clothes on a bush when we passed by!  Suggestion:  Try to go on to the Jardin Botanique at Pont de la Gaubie and, after seeing their wonderful display of Alpine Flowers, return to Barège by taxi. This will give you a chance to see this unique place and also shorten the next day

Barèges Hotels Europe (05.62.92.68.04) or Central (05.62.92.68.05) at Barèges.

This is a long day with the highest pass on the normal GR10 (2,509 M) at the Col de Madamet.  It has some really stunning views after a walk up the famous Aygues Cluses valley.  Again, you need to check the snow situation.  We had plenty of it in early July - but manageable.  Some very attractive scenery after the Col as you pass the lakes.  Lac d'Oredon is a bit off GR10 but there is a fairly obvious path.

Lac d'Orédon   Chalet-Hotel d'Orédon (05.62.39.63.33 or  06 23 05 72 60 ).  http://www.randozone.com/fiche.php?id=2005 Somewhere between a hotel and a gite.  It gets very full at times so booking is strongly advised.  This is not easy as the only phone connection is by Monsieur's mobile and he has to run out to the car park when it rings as reception is patchy.

Another quite long day with, unusually, two passes.  We think the ridge section must be very beautiful but had thick fog when we did it.  Navigation is tricky as one leaves the ridge three quarters of the way there.

Vielle-Aure  Hotel Aurelia (05.62.39.56.90) at Vielle-Aure http://www.hotel-aurelia.com/ A superb modern hotel with a pool and super views.  If you can plan a rest day here you will be delighted.

You get some fantastic views as you climb away from Vielle-Aure through two villages.

Loudenvielle  Hotel Les Galets de la Neste tél. 05.62.99.61.10, fax : 05.62.99.61.10 http://perso.orange.fr/galetsdelaneste/index.htm OR Auberge de Germ http://www.auberge-de-germ.com/ (05.62.99.91.93) or possibly Hostelrie de Templiers (05.62.99.68.03) Auberge des Isclots  05 62 99 66 21 at Loudenvielle.  Loudenvielle is a small village,1.5 Km short of Germ, but has good facilities including shops.  Hotel Les Galets de la Neste is comfortable with a good dining room.

D.  HAUTE GARONNE   SECTION

Granges d'Astau  Auberge d'Astau (05.61.79.35.63) at Granges d'Astau http://astau-pyrenees.com/  A cross between a hotel and a gite.  It is very popular at weekends and day visitors fill the outside bar area.

After an attractive day perhaps you can perhaps take the cable car down Bagners-de-Luchon but if relying on this it is advisable to check that it is running, as it does not do so until mid-July.  There is no hotel open at SuperBagners in the summer.

Bagnères-de-Luchon  There are many hotels in the town and a list is at  http://www.luchon.com/fr/index.php   Just outside is the Hotel Jardin des Cascades, at Montauban de Luchon 05.61.79.83.09.  The latter is in a very attractive place and not far from the main town centre.
