         ** So named because,  according to the composer's early biographer, Dies, during the performance a great chandelier fell from the ceiling, injuring no one (the audience had moved forward to view Haydn at closer range), and provoking cries of 'miracle, miracle!' The nickname stuck, but to the wrong symphony, No. 96, which despite efforts to restore justice is still commonly known as 'The Miracle'.
