Llanddewi Skirrid (Llandewi Skirrid/Llanddewi Ysgyrid/Llanddewi Scyrrid) is a small parish on the Abergavenny to Ross road (B4521) 3 miles northeast of Abergavenny (a Multimap Locator is available by selecting 'Location' on the Menu). Llanddewi Skirrid is a scattered community with the majority of inhabitants living in Bryn-y-Gwenin (48 properties) and the remainder (30 properties) sprinkled along the Ross road and down adjacent narrow lanes. In 1861 it was recorded that there were 24 inhabited houses and in 1901 the number had increased by 2 to 26. These figures would not have included Bryn-y-Gwenin so taking into account the sub-division of Llanddewi Court into 6 apartments the figure of 30 properties for 2004 reflects little change in the community over the years.
The village takes its name from Skirrid Fawr and the church of St David's, Dewi being one of the Welsh forms of David. Skirrid Fawr dominates the view to the west with outstanding vistas across a rural landscape to the east. The views from the top of the Skirrid are splendid and no matter how often you ascend the Skirrid you cannot fail to be rewarded by a magnificent scene. Skirrid (Ysgyrid) is a word signifying that which has been shivered or shattered. This is a reference to a part of the mountain that is said to have been broken off when the veil of the temple was rent after the crucifixion of our Lord. There are numerous tales, stories and legends about how the Skirrid came to be the shape it is. It is the most easterly mountain in the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons National Park border runs through Llanddewi Skirrid. Abergavenny is approximately 65 metres above sea level and the road to Llanddewi Skirrid climbs out of town and on reaching the small car park (map reference SO329164) for the public footpath to Skirrid Fawr you are 193 metres above sea level. Skirrid Fawr (also known as the Holy Mountain) is 486 metres at its highest point and it is an energetic walk from the car park to the summit.
There are no shops, public houses or schools in the village. The Church of St David is situated in the lee of Skirrid Fawr with Llanddewi Court nearby. The Court is an ancient building although today not recognisable as such. It appears to have originally been semi-fortified as it stands on a mound surrounded by walls. Llanddewi Court now in the ownership of Monmouthshire County Council is divided into six apartments.
