Lympstone and Surroundings

Lympstone Harbour and Clock TowerThe picturesque fishing village of Lympstone has around 2,000 residents, and is situated on the River Exe estuary, between Exmouth and Exeter. There is a wonderful variety of birds on the Exe estuary, with over 20,000 species observed.

Our school is in the centre of this old village and only two minutes' walk away from the lovely harbour where you can enjoy magnificent sunsets and panoramic views across the river.

The coastal resort of Exmouth is 5km south of Lympstone and has 3km of excellent, sandy and safe beach. The area is renowned for its mild climate, having among the highest sunshine records in England.

The ancient cathedral and university city of Exeter is about 12 km north of Lympstone. The city has a long and varied history, which is reflected in its rich architecture. You can still see parts of the original Roman walls around the city centre, the old Medieval Bridge, the magnificent Gothic cathedral with its Norman towers, Tudor houses, Georgian buildings, and the Victorian museum. Old meets new in Exeter, with its modern shopping streets, pubs, restaurants and entertainment including the Northcott Theatre.

Devon is an ideal mixture of blue seas and lush, green landscapes. Between the green hills and wild moorland are many idyllic river valleys, woods and romantic villages with thatched roofs. The area is a paradise for wildlife and ideal for lovers of nature. East from Exmouth, you can follow the high, red cliffs to the resort of Budleigh Salterton where the scenic River Otter meets the sea.

Continue east to the Victorian seaside town of Sidmouth, enclosed by red cliffs and home to a 1-week International Folklore Festival every summer with world music and eccentric entertainers! Further east is the charming fishing village of Beer, famous as a smuggler’s cove, and with its name, you can be sure to find a nice pub and restaurant!

South-west of Exeter, you can watch wild ponies and sheep in the Dartmoor National Park and enjoy the high, wild hills with their granite summits called “tors”. There are many ghost stories and legends about Dartmoor, not least ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, which brought Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to Devon.

In short, Lympstone and surroundings is the perfect place to spend your holiday.
